How does the air quality in Los Angeles vary by region/city?
-
I just saw a headline that Los Angeles is still the worst city in the US for air pollution. I live in West Hollywood/Beverly Hills area and go to school in Culver City, and I have never been bothered by the air quality, except for exceptionally humid days or when there are forest/brush fires. From what I've read, the mountains are the reason that the air quality is bad here. I'm wondering if Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Culver City, Westwood, etc. are at a high enough altitude in comparison to the valley areas that the air quality is not that bad here. I've lived in cities (in Northern Canada specifically) where the air pollution seemed infinitely worse than here! Do I just not notice it because I'm not in the valley? If anyone could find a map of LA county and air pollution levels I would be so grateful. I couldn't come up with anything in my searches.

Answer:
WoE is right... it's not the altitude, it's the ocean breezes. The ocean air currents come in and blow the majority of pollutants east, towards the San Gabriel Valley (and some north into SFV). The hills and mountains trap the pollution. It's been that way since the Tongva lived here... the first white people came and noted the smoke from the village campfires was trapped in the basin. This is why peopl want to live on the West side... the ocean breezes keep the weather milder, and the skies cleaner. I heard that Pittsburgh, PA is now #1 for particulate pollution: from factories and cars, but LA is still #1 overall because of the ozone issue. We're #2! We're #2!

The air quality is bad in Los Angeles, but if you live on the coastal side, the ocean breezes seem to move the smog to orange county and the San Gabriel valley. the western area of the san fernando valley is usually clear and you can see blue skies. Looking towards the east, ie North Hollywood-Burbank area, you can see the brown haze in the distance. But overall the air quality is far better than it was in the late 60's early 70's If you think the air quality is bad here, go to China! we 'invented' smog-- The Chinese refined air pollution to a fine art!

i blame the port of long beach and the port of los angeles for our poor air quality.

It depends. For example, if you walk in downtown LA, it smells like urine. That's bad quality air. If you enter a public restroom, well, don't breathe in there. By the way, you're pretty.
