Are any parts of Long Beach, California?

How bad is the air in long beach,ca?

  • According to wikipedia ----------------------------------- Long Beach suffers from some of the worst air pollution in southern California and the United States. Most of the city is in close proximity to the twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and the prevailing westerly-to-west-south-westerly winds bring a large portion of the twin ports' air pollution directly into Long Beach before dispersing it northward then eastward over Whittier, Covina, Pomona, and Riverside.[11] Heavy pollution sources at the ports include the ships themselves, which burn high-sulfur, high-soot-producing bunker fuel to maintain internal electrical power while docked, as well as heavy diesel pollution from drayage trucks at the ports, and short-haul tractor-trailer trucks ferrying cargo from the ports to inland warehousing, rail yards, and shipping centers. Long-term average levels of toxic air pollutants (and the corresponding carcinogenic risk they create) can be two to three times higher in and around Long Beach, and in downwind areas to the east, than in other parts of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, such as the Westside, San Fernando Valley, or San Gabriel Valley.[12] The smell of burning bunker fuel, which has an odor similar to a car burning motor oil, is not uncommon in downtown Long Beach and other port-adjacent areas. Additionally, the Long Beach area is directly downwind of several of the South Bay oil refineries. Any refinery process or upset that results in the atmospheric release of refinery by-products (commonly sulfur dioxide) will usually impact air in Long Beach. Air quality events where large portions of the City are affected by strong-smelling refinery gas releases occur several times a year, although they largely go unreported. Similarly, the water quality in the Long Beach portion of San Pedro Bay, which is enclosed by the Federal Breakwater, commonly ranks among the poorest on the West Coast. Many Long Beach beaches average a D or F grade on beach water quality in the Beach Report Card published by Heal the Bay.[13] The Los Angeles River discharges directly into the Long Beach side of San Pedro Bay, and conveys a large portion of all the urban runoff from the entire Los Angeles metropolitan area directly into the harbor water. This runoff contains most of the debris, garbage, chemical pollutants, and biological pathogens that are washed into storm drains in every upstream city each time it rains. Because the breakwater prevents normal tidal flushing and wave action, these pollutants build up in the harbor. The water enclosed by the breakwater, along most of the City's beaches, can be subject to red tides due to this stagnation as well. Because of these factors, the water in Long Beach often is unsafe for swimming. ------------------- Is it really that bad???

  • Answer:

If you want to discuss a town with a true toxic atmosphere than I suggest you research Wilmington and not Long Beach. When I got transferred out here 6 years ago from Dallas I thought that my already bad allergies would be really bad here. I typically got very sick 3-4 times a year in Dallas because of them. Guess what? Since I moved to Long Beach I haven't gotten sick once because of my allergies. This past year our water quality ratings increased to A's and B's. The ports and the city of LBC have both taken dramatic steps in making sure the water quality improves. They're replacing old sewage pipes and they've placed numerous berms on the LA River to collect debris before it hits our beaches. Most of the pollution that comes from the LA River is from towns upstream and not Long Beach. The ports have installed electric plug-in's for the ships so they aren't burning dirty bunker fuel while they wait to be unloaded. If a ship is found to be polluting too much or even leaking fuel it is escorted back out of the port. The port has banned polluting diesel trucks and funded programs to replace old trucks. I've never smelled the refineries here. If you want to smell refineries, go to Texas, where any environmental protection is met with derision. The South Coast Air Quality Management District closely monitors the air quality with monitors and responds to peoples complaints. You can even got on their website and look at air quality maps.

That is all very outdated. The port is now green. Only special emission trucks are able to use the port and there use to be something chaulk at the port that is no longer in the open air. I can't remember the exact name maybe it was called "chaulk". Also, in the most recent version of the Heal the Bay report all Long Beach beaches got an A.

Who ever posted that crap on Wiki must have had an extremist environmentalist agenda. Long Beach is on the coast, and gets air currents directly off the Pacific. The air is relative clean compared to more inland areas. Remember the prime rule about things you get over the Internet, IE: GIGO (Garbage in, garbage out).

well you got to remember people edit Wikipedia so you don't know how truthfully it is thats why some researcher discount it or don't allow it my mom lives in long beach and i have always see it clean and safe

No. I've been there a lot, usually near the coast, and the air seems fine to me, and I've never noticed a smell. Whoever wrote that hasn't spent much time in Long Beach.

The air pollution isn't that bad. The water and beach pollution is.

There are neighboring cities that are pretty bad. With ports, you have ships and railroads all mostly powered with diesel. The government is taking action to clean up the air, and I see more of the old diesel trucks being phased out. But I still see lots of old locomotive engines that look like they're from 50+ years ago and spew black smoke out. I work part time occasionally at refineries and they have pretty strict air emissions rules to follow. The lobbyists have been very successful in keeping air pollution with us. Arguments ensued that reducing air pollution in cars would cost us zillions of jobs back in the 70's and 80's. Well, another weak argument from the right. Yeah, my car will lose some gas mileage, but I get an EPA 30/38 in my 2003 Honda Civic and the exhaust is so clean, it amazes me when I stand next to an old VW Bug and how stinky the exhaust is. The amount of heart attacks and lung problems linked to air pollution is amazing. Just research facts, and avoid radical right or left opinions.
