What's it like to live in Hollywood?
-
In August, I'm going to college at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA. It's literally right by the Walk of Fame and I was offered to share a studio apartment with another student (most likely, a female). It's Vida Hollywood apartment complex and the rent is $1245 ($622.50 per person) a month. I plan on getting a part-time job as a barista at Starbucks (hopefully a good one). Do you think I'll make it in the troublesome life of Hollywood and what should I know about living in Hollywood?

Answer:
Interesting. SO many people know ALL about Hollywood, but have never even been there. I'm aware of MI, so no need to explain where it is. My main concern is the math. Even a FULL time job at a Starbucks guarantees that you'll be eating nothing but ramen noodles, trying to survive. A full time job will bring home about $1200 per month, and rent would take up more than half of that. I'm sure tuition at MI is going to cost you quite a bit. As for that apartment complex, they change names almost as much as you change your undies. The location is 1745 Wilcox, which cannot change. But I've seen them listed under 4 different names: Not a good sign. That area, known as K-Town, has a very high crime rate. The facade on the apartment may be nice, but that may be hiding the problems inside. Half the reviews on Apartment ratings seem to come from management shills: http://www.apartmentratings.com/rate/CA-Los-Angeles-The-Victor-Hollywood-formerly-Hollywood-Studio-Club-Apartment.html

The streets are filthy. The public transportation is functional. Most people work more than one job. Keep your eyes open for thieves and creeps.
Another Crone
The Hollywood district of Los Angeles which was once the "Golden City" during the height of the motion picture industry of the 1920's - 1950's has declined into just a dirty section of town full of the homeless, dopers, and prostitutes.. While it does contain some things that still attracts tourists, it's no longer one of the desirable spots to live.

Just to let you know, that place is a scam. And trust me, Hollywood is a DUMP. My cousin from Iowa was actually disappointed in Los Angeles because she believed all that television hype.
Hollywood is a shadow of it's former self. Today, prostitutes, drug dealers, and homeless bums roam the streets - simply not a good place to live.
Arrivederci
People need to snap out of their wonder dreams and stop watching TV shows about Los Angeles like 90210. Hollywood is nothing like it is in the TV shows. Like the person above me said, Hollywood was the Golden City from 1920s-1960ish. After that it went downhill.

Well, I've lived in Hollywood. It is indeed a wonderful place to live, beleive me! My apartment bldg. was just a 1/2 block off of Hollywood Blvd. My bedroom windown looked out on some of the most famous streets, buildings and places in the world. I walked everywhere as I didn't have a driver's license at the time. Supermarkets and stores, restaurants and delis are all nearby. Visit the official visitor's website for a lot of information about L.A. www.discoverlosangeles.com You can call the Hollywood Visitor's Center for information: Hollywood Visitor's Center 5801 Hollywood Blvd. Ste.237 Ph. 323 467-6412 Starbucks is a fabulous place and you should enjoy working there! Yes, I think you can make it in Hollywood, absolutely, just don't allow anyone to discourage you! Good Luck!
