It should be okay New Year's day, they are not open till midnight if you plan to spend New Year's eve there. However City Walk is where the crowd hangs out and that gets pretty crowded.
I went there several years ago for NYE and it was SUPER PACKED. In my opinion its not worth going, I was stuck in the parking lot longer than i was inside!

It will be very busy, but it's worth it IMO. In case you don't know, "Cali" is an inappropriate way to address the state.
