I'm Moving to LA in the summer. Whats the best place to stay?
-
Well I will be graduating high school in June and I really want to move out to LA in the summer. I will be getting a job, minimum wage to $10 an hour at most. I will have a roommate and he has a job already, he is living there now. We will be splitting the cost of rent and I just want to know where is the best affordable place to live. I want to live comfortably in my new home, a place with a low crime rate. I am moving from one of the safest cities in the country and I don't know how its like over there and how I will adjust. I saw a house for rent online, it was in harbor city. It was a beautiful house, two bedroom and I want something like that. If any of you live over there now, please recommend a place:) thank you.

Answer:
If your main reason for moving to Los Angeles is to "pursue you dream of becoming an actor/actress" forget it. You would simply become one more empty face in the crowd of over (literally) a million wannabes already here. Moving to Los Angeles does NOT do anything to your chances of getting into "show" business. You can NOT survive in California on a minimum wage job. You will need a minimum $30,000 - $35000 annual salary just to scrape by. You would have to do this in California which has the country's 2d highest unemployment rate. Jobs are practically nonexistent here, especially for teens just out of high school, and with no real working experience. College grads are finding it difficult to find work during this recession There are NO $600 a month apartments here. Forget scams like Craigslist. A typical one bedroom apartment in the L.A area will start in the $1000 -$1100 range, and move in costs would be triple that (first, last, & security). You simply can NOT afford to live in the Los Angeles area at this time. If you have an I.Q. higher than a pencil, you'll stay where you are, go to college, and get a degree, and while you are doing that get a part time job to get working experience, and save up as much money as possible. You need at least $10,000 - $15,000 cash in hand to make a successful move. Right now you're totally under funded.

Under one of the lifeguard stands on Venice Beach. Free rent, bath a few yards away.

If the rent is inexpensive compared to most areas, it's not the most ideal places to live. $600 a month for rent is VERY inexpensive = most people would not consider living in Harbor City (I wouldn't).

No such place. Best and affordable does not exist, especially in Los Angeles. If you want a beautiful house, two bedroom, $10 an hour is not going to cut it. And if you have no money saved up, forget about it. In a few months, you'll be out of cash and moving back. --------- Update: Modest for $600 doesn't exist. If you found a place for $600, it's a scam (assuming Craigslist.) Even the ghetto doesn't have 2 bedrooms for $600 mo. Even where I live doesn't have $600 for a 1 bedroom, and I live in an area cheaper than Los Angeles.
You want to live comfortably in a low-crime area? In Los Angeles? Sorry, that is NOT going to happen on minimum wage which is $8.00 per hour here. If you were to work 40 hours per week, you will only rake in about $1,280 ($8.00 x 40 = $320 x 4 = $1,280) or about $15,360 per year and that is BEFORE taxes. If you want to live comfortably in LA, you will need a job that pays 6 figures a year. Oh, and another thing, $600 per month is dirt cheap (LA standards) for a 2 bedroom HOUSE. It may look beautiful on the outside, but it might be hiding something on the inside. Check out: http://lalife.com/Harbor_City

Thanks, Pup, you took the words right out of my mouth. You should give him best answer. That place in Harbor City is for a ROOM, not the whole place. And Harbor City has a very high crime rate.

I would say that no where in Los Angeles is a good place to live. I have visited friends there twice (all of which came back here to Toronto because of how much they hated it in Los Angeles) and I will tell you right now it was the worst city I have ever been to. Nothing vibrant or unique about it at all. Just a big sprawl of subdivision houses and big box retail stores and barely any small businesses. Even in the very centre of the city it's the same thing. The air is insanely polluted and the traffic is extremely congested, because of the very poor planning of public transportation system. The metro can barely take you anywhere, the autobusses are expensive and take forever just to get to the next neighbourhood. Trust me, moving to California is a big mistake. Come here to Canada instead. We have great cities like Toronto and Montreal that are very well developed and with the friendliest people you will ever meet.
