Answer:
It's probably best if you live near your work. You don't want to work in Santa Monica and live in Pasadena and also have classes and auditions to run to all over LA. Ask HR if they have apt listings. I know apt building owners that post apt listings at hospitals. If you're working for a doctor, ask where the other employees live, that may give you an idea on where to start. Many of the nurses I know actually live on the edges of LA or past -- like Chino or Santa Clarita -- because they've bought homes in nice areas they can afford and commute to work. Some work short weeks/long days so it works out OK. It's not really cheap anywhere in LA, but depending on what kind of nurse you are and if you get a signing bonus, you should do OK. It will be tight, so you might want to get a roommate, since you'll have the added expense of acting lessons. There are many good places in LA to study acting, no matter where in the LA area you are on - from Santa Monica to Pasadena and in the valley, you should be able to find a good acting school. Auditions are held all over LA. Here are a few good acting schools. Be wary of some that are expensive and do a lot of advertising, best to check into the schools before you put out your money. I would contact the hospitals and see if they have any low cost apts for their nurses.

There is nowhere in California (ESPECIALLY Los Angeles) where rent is cheap. You will also need about $10,000 to start off. Decent prices start at $1000 mo. for either an extremely small studio or a 1bd/1ba apartment if you're lucky. There is no such thing as $350 mo. here. A minimum waged job alone will barely pay the rent. Remember, you need to eat, you need water, gas, electric, personal hygiene, etc.
You an contacts the Hospitals and ask them on where the rent is cheap. Or you can look at the services they offer.

You live near where you get a job. Within 5-10 miles. The city is far too big to move first and look for a job after.

We see this every day in this forum: Everyone wants to move here, and is looking for “cheap/affordable and safe". However, such a place just doesn’t exist; the two terms are mutually exclusive. It's all about supply and demand: If it's in SoCal, then it's not going to be cheap to begin with. If it's a safe area, then it's more expensive. If you need good schools, add a couple hundred bucks a month on top of it. If you want to live here and enjoy the weather, then you have to pay for it. You put up with the smog and the traffic, enjoy the weather and pay your rent or mortgage. My advice is to start checking out craigslist, rent.com, and apartments.com if you are looking to rent. You’ll quickly see that the minimum rent for a non-war zone is about $1,000-$1,200 per month for a studio or 1BR. Really nice areas (like the West LA area) easily run $3,000 or more. Want to live near the beach? Expect to pay a premium. "LA" is such a big place, there are so many neighborhoods/cities where you can live. Of course, even within a city or neighborhood, there are safer sections and less-safe sections. In Los Angeles, some nice sections are West LA, Brentwood, Westwood, Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey, Los Feliz, Silverlake, Eagle Rock, Encino, Tarzana, Studio City, Toluca Lake, Granada Hills, Woodland Hills, Sherman Oaks, West Hills, Chatsworth. To the east: South Pasadena, parts of Pasadena, Altadena, Arcadia, Monrovia, Glendora, San Dimas, Laverne, Azusa, Rancho Cucamonga. Along the beach: Santa Monica, Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, Palos Verdes, Rancho PV. In Orange County aka "The OC": Seal Beach , Huntington Beach , Newport Beach , Corona Del Mar , Laguna Beach , Dana Point , Capistrano Beach , San Clemente , Brea, Yorba Linda, Orange, Tustin, Irvine, Laguna Hills, Rancho Santa Margarita, Lake Forest To the west: Agoura, Calabasas, Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Simi Valley, Moorpark. This is not an all-inclusive list, but it's a start. Speaking of which, you should start looking in Burbank. Auditions are held all over town, but this is probably a good place to start. Hollywood has some really rotten parts, so I would avoid it. Personally, I would try to find a place close to your nursing job, to reduce your commute time. You'll need that time to practice your acting skills.
