Safe neighborhoods in LA?

Are there decent safe and cheap neighborhoods near ghettos in the LA metro area?

  • I mean neighborhoods that are safe but people don't know it because they think that they're still part of the ghetto and that's why they're cheap.

    These are called "transitional neighborhoods" and there are a number of them in the LA area. Echo Park is one, Koreatown is another. Moving to these places gives you access to cheaper housing in a solid community, but you have to do deal with city issues like property crime, homeless populations, etc.

Nope. "Safe" is a feeling. Those "transitional" neighborhoods like Echo Park and KTown still have rather high crime. http://projects.latimes.com/mapping-la/neighborhoods/ You get what you pay for.

Sorry, doesn't exist. Safe and cheap are mutually exclusive. In L.A., you get what you paid for.

"Ghetto" in LA isn't cheap, the Section 8 voucher (welfare housing help for the poorest) amount for a single is about $1000, for a one bedroom about $1200, so that's what apartments cost even in the poorest neighborhoods. (Section 8 waiting list got years long so they aren't taking applicants.) Nice neighborhoods next to the least desirable aren't necessarily cheap, in LA, there can be nice neighborhoods of mansions a few blocks from very undesirable neighborhoods. Neighborhoods that border undesirable neighborhoods tend to have crime spill over. Cities like Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena have safe neighborhoods that are reasonably priced (by LA standards, so still expensive) for what you get. One might find something in an ok neighborhood, an ok single for $900, and an ok 1 bedroom for $1100, but they may not be acceptable to you.
