Middle class neighborhoods in LA?
-
I've heard LA has a lot of cities and neighborhoods and they seem to be divided by class. Such as Malibu, Hollywood, etc are more for the rich, downtown, and other places are for the poor but aren't there any middle or working class neighborhoods in LA?

I don't know why people think Hollywood is for the rich! Yes, there are some rich neighborhoods, but overall it is far more middle-class. Middle class in LA is said to be about $100,000 for a couple. Teachers working for LAUSD on the average make over $60,000 (some quite a bit more with time) and a LA cop makes more (some over $100,000 with overtime). Similar salaries for nurses and firemen (or even more), plumbers, electricians, secretaries, paralegals, etc. There are lots of *middle class* neighborhoods in LA county -- much of the valley, hollywood, wilshire area, highland park, eagle rock, silverlake, mt washington, glendale, pasadena all have middle class areas. Sure, houses are expensive, but if you buy when the prices aren't flying up (like has happened in the past, don't know why people are surprised about the drop), the home will be a good investment and keep it's value and go up. In LA, you just have to spend more for housing than you'd like. It sucks, but imho it's better than living someplace like Houston. = )

There are many middle class areas in L.A. It's just that certain people are stuck in a box so they never know they exist. My favorite middle class area is Lakewood, it's outside of Long Beach. It is the perfect town, it's diverse, safe for kids, has a lot shopping, restaurants, and good freeway access.

Most of the city is middle and working class. You just hear about the rich and poor areas because it makes for good TV. People just working to pay the bills aren't necessarily glamorous or exciting. For example, would you rather watch "Beverly Hills 90210" or "Eagle Rock 90041". I thought so. Class lines are rather fuzzy, anyway. Where do you draw the line between working class and middle class? What if a construction worker is married to a doctor? That's the nice part about LA: You have all kinds of people together in one place, and social position isn't really that important.

Growing Up in LA this really frusterates me. There really aren't any middle class areas in LA. LA is divided by either rich or poor. Its very sad. Lakewood is filled with minorities and gangs. Many of the people who are working class are immagrants with 5-6 kids and the kids are gang members. I have some friends who are teachers for LAUSD and they get $35,000 per year.

I would consider the typical classifications of people not grouped right here in L.A. I would say, consider categorizing people in working class and non-working class. There is a major gap in between what is very rich and what is very poor. The middle class lean towards the poor side then the rich. Working down here there is a big barrier in income and to jump from the middle to upper class is a very giant leap with a lot of requirements in not just how much you work. Such as what you are talking about with Malibu, Hollywood and the such, although there are people who have a flux of income and manage to live in the richer areas. There incomes go up and down but managed to get a place in the richer areas but struggle a lot when they aren't making as much money in whatever they do.

Actually 80% of the land area in greater LA is middle class neighborhoods. They are the places you never hear from in the news because they are clean, safe and quiet. Just the way we like them.

There are plenty of middle class neighborhoods in the LA area. Not everyone is a celebrity or a beggar lol.
