    Try the Vic in Santa Monica. It's adorable: http://www.thevicforjazz.com/. There are some poetry places scattered around. You can pick up an LA Weekly for free around town and it will tell you what's happening and where. Also, you can poke around on Craig's List as sometimes you find interesting events posted there: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/. Have fun.
