Any good talent agencies in LA?

Talent Agencies in LA?

  • I'm interning at a talent agency in Chicago right now and my goal is to be a talent agent in LA for television and film. Anyone have any advice? It's near impossible to get a hold of anyone at the agencies out there, but I haven't really been trying hard I guess. What are some talent agencies that are worth the energy of trying to get a hold of?

  • Answer:

CAA (Creative Artists Agency) is THE agency in Hollywood. Name any top star and the chances are very good they're with CAA. They are in the CAA building in Century City. www.caa.com There's a branch of CAA in Chicago. Swing by there and talk with them. It can't hurt and you might get in at a beginning level. Just do a web search of the agencies in Hollywood. Contact those that interest you. The important thing is to KEEP ON TRYING. Don't give up if you get nowhere the first time around. Build a good resume in Chicago and then go to L.A. and start making the rounds of the agencies. Look into starting your own agency too. Some agents in L.A. begin working alone and advance to working for some one of the major agencies. Like becoming an "overnight star", becoming an agent doesn't really happen overnight. It takes work, work, work and then some more work. Good luck!

This town is all about contacts. During your tenure at the Chicago agency, have you had any contacts at all with agencies in LA? Use every opportunity to make a contact out here, short of getting yourself fired. Opportunities usually present themselves from time to time, so be prepared. You can understand why it's difficult to get ahold of people at agencies, right? They are inundated with inquiries from wannabe clients, but need to spend time with their current crop of talent. As for talent agencies, that's not my forte. The folks in the actors and acting forum can help you with that. My opinion is that ANY agency you can get ahold of is a good lead.

The best way is through your current agency, does anyone there have connections to any LA agencies? Ask, ask, ask. I think all intern jobs at the big agencies here are for college students, and jobs are extremely competitive, grads from top colleges will be your competition, including those with law degrees. If you're in college, ask the career office if there are any alumni at agencies that you can contact, any job info, etc. Typically, at the big agencies the entry level jobs are mailroom, and assistant. The working environment is not very nice so there is turnover, but the competition is tough, Harvard and Yale grads, etc. Good luck!
