Whats the major difference between New York City and Los Angeles?

Lots of differences. I've lived in both places, so I'll give you the run down: 1) The weather. N.Y. has 4 seasons, L.A. has 2-3. Also, the summer is dry, so its a lot more bearable than in N.Y. 2) The people are, in general, more cordial and friendly in L.A. You don't wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of blaring horns. Also, I have yet to meet an Angelino who has yelled at my mother for being crippled. 3) Things are done less aggressively in L.A. than in N.Y. You may find yourself wondering how things get done, but trust me, they do, and in a lot less stressful a fashion. If you're going to work out here, you'll find the business climate is just as fast paced. 4) Things are spread out, and there are more vehicles on the road in L.A. You NEED a car in L.A. or you will be impotent. However, despite the distances, I've found that it takes an equal amount of time to get to the important places in L.A. as it does in N.Y., the only difference is the mode of transportation. 5) Only the essential places are open past 2 AM in L.A., like drug stores and supermarkets, with a few exceptions. Everything else closes early, so its hard to find stuff to do between 2AM and 8AM. 6) Where in N.Y., everything you'd want to see is Downtown, in L.A. everything you want to see is NOT anywhere NEAR downtown. Hollywood is where the nightlife is (though they are trying to revitalize the Downtown area and have opened a few good bars and clubs worth checking out). 7) We pronounce Houston as Hews-tun, not House-tun. 8) It is generally a lot cleaner. 9) Despite what most New Yorkers think, if you look at things objectively, there's a hell of a lot of culture here. 10) The pizza and bagels taste the same. No, stop, its exactly the same. However, I must confess, the best pizza I've had was in Chicago.

la closes at dusk and NY is 24/7

New York is older and is an island. There is very little undeveloped land. NewYork has to build up rather than out. Hardly anyone has a car cuz parking is at a premium. You take the subway or train. LA everyone drives and it is really spread out. Of course California has the better weather year round, but for those who like seasons there is nothing better than New York.

The people are more attractive in L.A.

Dear Oosmileo, many of the answers given are right-on,but this is one of those questions that requires your inner thoughts. It is very hard to answer cause deep inside you only know where you want to be. Your family, friends,and places only you can relate. That is what matters most. But if you still want to move then consider your education and where you want your career to be at. Glad to be of help.

NYC is fast paced, crowded, no space, you cant even drive if you have a job in the city but no need to due to subways ect. Nobody seems to care about anybody elses business and heaven forbid you look into someones eyes on the street. La is also very populated but more spread out. As far as fitting in Cali has its own type a bit more laid back La is more into whats your status? Who do you know? Whats in it for me? Does that make sense? Very opposite from my experience

People wear COLORS in Los Angeles (not only black, like in Manhattan) ... It's much more "laid back" ... There are actually TREES and FLOWERS, even in the city! ... You'll need a car, since every other vehicle in LA is NOT a taxi:) and everything is very spread out ... You can actually RENT (or lease) an apartment (as opposed to buying one in Manhattan), and your landlord will be normally be expected to repaint & supply carpet & drapes (you need to do all that yourself in NYC) ... The general "mindset" between the 2 cities, though, is 180deg. different, and you might find some "culture shock" - although the housing costs will not seem terribly high to you, after living in Manhattan.....
