How difficult is it to get a job in Las vegas?
-
hi my husband and i are moving to las vegas next winter. i will be working as a hospital registered nurse, and my job is secured before i arrive. my husband will be 35, has a computer degree which he has never used for work, and is a support worker for homeless people with drug/alcohol and social issues. when he goes to las vegas he will be looking straight away for work. he also has 6 years retail experiance with places like walmart, supermarkets etc from when he was a student supporting himself.. he would like to remain in work helping others as he does at the moment but is very open minded to taking anything that might suit him like hospital work, casinos etc . can anyone please advise me realistically what the job market for newcomers is like, and how difficult it will be to secure employment.....im not sure if a nurses wage can support two people for a great length of time?? we are coming over from Scotland. thanks in advance for any advice louise

Answer:
Don't listen to that idiot Jewell Perez. They make money by people hitting on their website. The fact is it is very difficult for people to get a job here. For every single opening there or 100 well qualified applicants that already live here. Many jobs even advertise that they will only consider people who already live here for so many years before they would even look at them. Surprisingly people are still moving here. I don't know if they don't believe anyone or have been in the dark for the last few years. You are lucky, as an RN, you have one of the few careers that still hire here and still pays a good deal of salary. You should be fine on your salary alone. Might want to read the following webpage.

It may be difficult for your husband to find work in Las Vegas if the economy doesn't turn around quickly. Las Vegas has very high unemployment right now. I believe it's been staying right around 14% to 15% for the past year or so. Hopefully he'll be able to find something he likes!

I would suggest he look into working at one of the residential programs for the mentally challenged like Danville Services or Holdsworth. The State, County and cities have frozen hiring generally. Casino jobs are rare and those open are generally minimum wage like housekeeping.

its quite bleak at the moment 14 percent unemployment or higher in the area almost all construction has stopped you see skeletons of casinos waiting to be finished all over the strip.

Las Vegas has one of the highest unemployment rates in the U.S. Your salary as an R.N. will certainly be sufficient to support 2 people. I supported 5 people for many years as an R.N. Of course, I did work overtime when available. With his education and flexibility, hopefully , he will be ale to find a job. I presume he is coming on a "dependent" visa with you and that the visa allows him to work..
