I am moving to Las Vegas in March, what kind of jobs are available besides food and bar service?
-
I will be 23, moving with a few friends. I have a background in food service and customer service and a year of salaried restaurant management. I know that all points back to food service but if there is anything else booming in the are I would like to try that out. Also any advice on any other aspect of Las Vegas would be appreciated.

Answer:
Good luck. There just aren't many jobs here. Have you been reading the paper or watching the news? Vegas has the highest unemployment in the nation. People continue to move here and soon find themselves stranded or finding ways to get out. Keep in mind you can't get unemployment if you can't find a job when you move here so when you money runs out how are you going to survive?

there is nothing booming in Las Vegas right now. It will be difficult to find even a resturant job. You and your friends should seriously consider moving some place where there are more jobs.
Burt.
Trust me, don't move here. You'll regret it. There isn't anything here at all, believe me, I've been looking. Our unemployment rate is something like 15% right now, if not higher. And that doesn't even count the underemployment rate (people with higher education taking low education/low-wage jobs). It sucks right now. I'm finding even low-wage jobs are hard to come by anymore. For the past three years or so, I've been at a part-time min. wage job, and I feel lucky to have even that. Most places have had hiring freezes in place for well over a year now. We've got so many people on unemployment checks and have so many houses foreclosed on, that businesses are grasping for breath. I filed chapter 7 bankruptcy last year. When I checked bankruptcy stats for that time frame, our city's bankruptcy filings were higher than usual. Also in the past two years, just in a 5 mile radius of where I live, I've seen Rite Aid, Albertsons, Vons, Dairy Queen, various cigarette shops, and others close down. I figured they would return eventually, but they haven't. If was you, I'd seriously rethink this move. I'd find another city to move to that has better odds of survivability. Vegas has gone down the tubes and we're probably not going to really start seeing any real recovery for another 5 to 10 years.
Pimp, gigolo, manwhore?!
Local mall shops, Kmart/Sears. Grocery stores. Telecenters. Pizza delivery. Casino jobs. Hotel Jobs.
That was my final Answer.
Yes, there are many job openings right now in Las Vegas. My friend also went there and he also had the same background just like yours. But he managed a good job in LV in a shopping mall as a floor manager for the food and beverage section. He draws a good amount of salary out there and when he called me up few days ago, he told that he is enjoying his job there.
