Is Las Vegas busy on the forth of July? Is the traveling population going to be too crazy?
-
My friend offered my boyfriend and me a free buddy pass (Delta) and I want to leave from Tampa on July 1st to Las Vegas and come back on July 5th. The ticket is free, but my boyfriend and I would be on standby so I wouldn't be able to know if I could get on the plane until the very last minute. Anyone have any experience with this. My friend just got hired a few months ago so she doesn't really know what to expect.

Honestly I don't think you are going to find a standby flight from Florida (to and fro) this time of year, or any time within a week of the 4th. I know the flights from Vegas to FL and back are not cheap, and it's not a typical route, so I expect the flights to be jammed. Every year I have lived here Vegas on the 4th has become more and more of a travel destination and it's pure insanity. I hate to be a downer, but even if you are here, you are going to go nuts from the crowds watching the fireworks on the strip. I'd personally just go to somewhere on the Atlantic and try coming here on a non-tourist weekend if you are going standby!

As a travel agent, I know this -- prices can be almost DOUBLE if you stay in Vegas over ANY holiday (with the possible exception of Groundhog Day). I've seen it on my own website. And then flying standby into a major tourist destination for a holiday. Ummmmmm . . . I'm not one to discourage, so I'd say if you wanna give it a shot, go for it . . . but you may want alternate plans to fall back on. Good luck!

Holiday weekends in Vegas are full. You will need a room reservation ahead of time or you could end up without a room. Check www.lasvegasnow.com for links Standby these days is risky since airlines overbook and people get bumped, so standby could mean waiting and waiting and waiting, not the way to travel on a three-day weekend, especially to Vegas

Oh my! We were there on Easter weekend, and it was wall to wall people. I was there several years ago on July 4th & it didn't seem as busy then, but it was HOT!

You would be travelling Tues & Sat which are the slowest travel days for Vegas so you will probably have a pretty good chance of getting on the plane both ways if it's non-stop flights. If the flight is connecting though it's a gamble because you might get on the plane that goes to Atlanta but then not on the one that goes the rest of the way. Also keep in mind flying standby with another person you will probably NOT get to sit beside them, and there is a chance that only one of you would get offered a seat and not the other one.

Vegas is always crowded, expect in the dead of winter sometimes. July 4th wont be much worse then another weekend...
