Need Survival Tips: San Diego to Vegas Road Trip?
-
Hi, I'm going to be switching my primary residence from San Diego to Las Vegas (tax reasons). I'll be making a few road trips between the two cities over the next few months via a 2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S…. totally looking forward to this! :) Despite my advanced age [38], I've never taken a long road trip before and could use some pointers from those of you who have made the trek. (1) I'm assuming I won't be able to make the trip on a single tank of gas. Where's the best place to stop for fuel? I don't want to end up on empty in some desolate stretch with no gas stations. (2) I've equipped my car with the best radar and laser detectors (and jammers!) that money can buy, but I'm still cautious. Are there some well known speed-traps that I should be aware of? (3) I've never driven out in the middle of nowhere like this before. I imagine there are all kinds of unique hazards that I need to be aware of. Example: Do I have worry about some weird animals (e.g. turtles, roadrunners, camels, whatever) crossing the road out there? What about biker gangs? Or does that kind of stuff only happen in the movies? (4) If God forbid I get stranded in the middle of my trip, is cell service available in the "middle of nowhere" portion of the trip? I use Verizon. (5) What's the best time to leave from San Diego to avoid traffic? What about the opposite direction, leaving from Vegas? (6) Do I have to worry about snow? Here's the thing. I know it doesn't snow in Vegas nor in San Diego, but it looks like the trek involves going over the mountains where it presumably DOES snow in season. My car is totally unfit for snow. Putting chains on the tires is not allowed and it invalidates the warrantee. I have to avoid snow situations at all costs… SO… What zip code shall I use on weather.com as a proxy for weather conditions in these mountainous areas?? Or is this something I even need to worry about? Any other tips? Thanks.
