i lived in san francisco and now los angeles but frequently go to las vegas as a getaway from work. making friend with residents in las vegas they have always told me how they want to get out of las vegas. why is that? i haven't meet one resident of las vegas that feels good and proud to grow up in las vegas except the one on the radio but thats their job and radio personal never claim to be from las vegas but rather california. after reading forbes im beginning to think las vegas is not the way it used to be. don't get me wrong i like las vegas to go partying but i've been hearing now that the city became a money hungry city.

Answer:
Like any city, there are good areas and bad areas. I would guess 80% of crime is committed in 20% of the city (again, not uncommon for any metropolitan area). A little common sense will keep you safe, even when partying and carrying on. I think reports like this are much more common because of Vegas's "anything goes" reputation. As for me, I'd much rather be in Vegas than Detriot.

Drugs, lost fortunes, many move there to be closer to gambling, and cant get a good paying job and lose it all. It is a dangerous place, most of the areas up against the strip are pretty bad places, its easy to see as you drive around. The outer city areas, are pretty nice, the ones detached from the gambling mecca area.

im fine with it because im from louisiana and new oorleans in number 1 lol

The strip is pretty safe. I think the real high crime areas are up in North Vegas and other neighborhoods you won't be visiting as a tourist. You're right, it is a money hungry city. $8 drinks. $5 ATM fees. Despite staying in a major strip hotel (Excalibur), Internet access was an additional $13.99 per day. Plus a lot of the great 'deals' evaporate when you get there. We were promised a 3 ticket free for a show at the Ex when we made reservations, but when we got there they said we didn't have the right package deal to qualify. That kind of thing happened a lot. The days of free drinks and $5 buffetts is long gone.

Take it for what you want from it but any big city will have crime. I would rather live here than LA. I can walk anywhere I want. I know what areas to avoid and I do. I wouldn't move from here unless I absolutely have to move. I love the weather. I went swimming in my pool on Thanksgiving and I used my jacuzzi on Christmas day. It was better when the mob owned and ran everything. These punk criminals where taken care of the right way. You come to town and cause trouble .. you didn't leave the easy way. Anyone who experienced those days will tell you the same. It was better before the corporations and politicians took over.

Well, you have to understand that the statistics, number of violent crimes per 100,000 is based on population size. But any city that has a large transient population such as resorts are always going to have skewed numbers. That is because the actual number of violent crimes is per number of actual permanent residents. I is exaggerated because far more people visit Las Vegas than live in Las Vegas. Even resorts like Palm Beach FL and Orlando FL are on that list, illustrating the bias caused by the transients. But when you see a place like Detroit which does not have large numbers of tourists, the number are much more accurate. On the whole, the Vegas Strip is much safer than most neighborhoods where the tourists come from. But like any major urban area you need to stick to the busy areas and not wander away into poorer neighborhoods, especially if you are drunk or otherwise vulnerable. *
