Moving to Warm Weather?

Moving to Texas, best area for safe weather, affordable Utilities?

  • Hello, my BF and I are moving to texas. He is getting a job promo and we could move to any of the areas that Bimbo Bakeries USA are. I am all about saving money, but will pay more for quality. What locations do you know that you feel is better on Utilities, apartments, features, shopping and convenience, safe weather, I am in Elkhart Indiana and we have really no comparable severe weather. What to watch out for when it comes to apartments, utilities, etc. We currently have all utilities paid except electric. Only $30 bucks. We are very conservative but we dont have we you would consider HOTTT hunid weather. What to expect to pay for rent utilites and any great apartment deals, any info would be greatly appreciated and a tremendous help!

  • Answer:

Best not move to Houston. Dallas is more to your needs but bills are not going to be low in Texas. Temperature get high and require air conditioning. Utilities will not be cheep. And Houston is humid and in the hurricane surge plain. Think no lower than Dallas. Perhaps San Antonio.

In Texas, we can pick and choose our electric company. Once you know where you will live, you can see which companies provide service to your area and select from those (they will tell you what rates are for your zip code). The chances of you having a light bill of only $30 on average for any place in the state is slim to nil. Although we have mild winters compared to some parts of the country, it is our summers which eat power. The interior gets up above 100 during the summer--not every day, but that does happen. Along the coast, it is not as hot, but it is quite humid. In the Greater Houston area, we get matching heat and humidity many days-- 95F and 95% humidity as an example. Every part of Texas--just like every other part of the US--has stormy weather from time to time. The hurricane that hit the Texas coast last fall is a type which has not hit the Houston-Galveston area since 1983 and prior to that--1961. The Hill Country gets flash floods every once in a while. The Arklatex gets ice storms sometimes. The Panhandle gets blizzards. The western part of the state gets drought from time to time. As for rent rates, I don't know what a good rate is. It has been a long time since I rented, but no doubt a good Realtor could lead you in the right direction. I don't know whether this has helped or not, but remember.... Texas is bigger than the whole nation of France. We have many major metro areas and bigger towns. It is hard to generalize for the state.

San antonio and Austin are good areas to be. No matter where you end up you will have an electric bill since you will be running the AC year round. Our "winter Season" lasts for 3 days if were lucky. (LOL) You will have some humidity there but not as bad as in the Houston area. You will get plently of rain and when you do get cold weather, you can enjoy the snow flurries but without having to clear off mounds of snow.
