How much would a black cab cost?

In houston, how much would a cab cost to go 8 miles?

• I have a job orientation and it takes 2 weeks. I have NO problem getting to my job, but the orientation is downtown. I can't drive. My question is how much would a cab cost going 8 miles? I can get dropped off at the orientation site by family, but they all work mon - fri. The orientation is 7.75 miles(According to mapquest) from my job. There is no bus line that will take me even remotely close there... I'd have to walk well over a mile, and I am in time constraint. So I need a cab. So, just like the topic says, how much? I have never taken a cab before, and would very much prefer just paying someone like 60$ taking me from the orientation to the job site, but I don't even have friends here, I just moved. I am desperate!

  If you call the cab company and tell them the exact locations of the pick-up and drop-off, they will give you a price. And BEFORE you get into the cab, tell the driver where you're going and ask where he/she will charge. If it's a great deal above the rate the cab company quoted you, then bargain or call another cab. The reason I'm suggested bargaining is because you never know what kind of driver you'll get. Some go straight there and the meter in the cab that is calculating the distance/charge is fair. Some roam around and make the fair more. But if you bargain with them like "I need a ride to the 10000 N Main. Can you take me there for $20?" They'll either say yes, or give you their price. Worth trying.
