How is the quality of life in Houston?
-
I am moving from Japan osaka, to Houston. Im not japanese Im american but I have an option to work here in japan or go to Houston. How is the entertainment and city life there? I heard There is a great opportunity to make money and the cost of living is lower than most of the U.S in Houston for a major city. But quality is not always measured in how much you have but sometimes in what you don't have. Such as........trees, waterfalls, changing colors of the seasons, mild climate and clean air to breathe

Where are you from originally? I would recommend a visit before making such a major move if it is possible for you to come here. Houston is really, really great but it might not be for everyone esp coming from Japan? The Pros: we are very, very diverse city we are a large city with lots to do (practically the capital of restaurants) no really cold weather or snow great jobs market in comparison to the rest of the country lots of different places in driving distance ( Austin, San Antonio, Galveston Island and more!) Cost of living is pretty low compared to other major metros Not a concrete jungle, plenty of large biking and running trails, we have loads of beautiful areas The Cons: We are very spaced out without much public transportation (getting around may often require driving in traffic) We are diverse but not as integrated as we really could be as in New York or London Hot, Humid, Hotter, Humid, Mosquitoes, Heat, want to die from heat ( 6months of the year at least) No true seasons ( since you mentioned this maybe it's important to you..) We have air quality issues ( major chemical plants near here) I do not notice this but others tell me that they do. We have air quality advisories all the time Crime is about the same as any large city I guess. Hey it's way safer than NY but not as safe as smallville Rains a lot in summer occasionally have serious floods or hurricanes

You can find most of the opportunities you'd like to have in a warm climate here. There is some coloring of fall leaves, but not like you'd find in the north east part of the country. What is in large supply here are the warm hearts of south. People are very accepting and welcoming here. The cost of real estate here is lower than most states, but it's not free. You can't find million-dollar houses for $50,000, either. It's just lower than most places. The air here is one of the most polluted places in the US. The up side to that is we get some of the most interesting sunsets (because the sun pierces through the pollution and it causes some green tones, lots of coral or red tones, and occasionally other colors. It's an artist's delight. There is a lot of entertainment here. There are so many festivals that there are lots of free papers that are filled with the ads for them. Houston has it's own symphony, lots of theaters for plays, movie theaters, leisure learning opportunities, an aquarium, a zoo, several good parks and one or two amazingly great parks. It is quite different from Osaka. I have been to both. I love Japan for it's beauty and culture, it's uniqueness. Houston is on the south gulf coast, just a two hour drive from the beach. There are great universities here, the Texas landscapes are quite varied, and uniquely clustered together by type. I find that fascinating. You can choose which type of land feature you want to visit, then go see just that type of hill, forest, flat land, desert, or coast. If you love doing your own landscaping (or having it done) buy a house. If you don't want anything to do with the landscape, buy an apartment or townhome.

Houston is the only state in the US where you can get all of the seasons in one week. I speak the truth! Other than that, Houston is a great place to live. I live in Pearland which is just out side of Houston and when I go there it's always a great experience.

Boring. They try to hide their accents, but it doesn't work. They're envious of New York, so they try to be like NYC, but that doesn't work either. In a word, Houston sucks. It's basically a larger version of the country.

Houston has it but right now we are under pollution watch today. All the chemical plants can change the air from good to bad fast.
