Fun things to do in Houston, Texas?
-
My family and I are visiting Houston next weekend for spring break. Are there any fun things to do? There will be 2 adults, my brother and 2 of his friends (all 17 y/o), me (14), my little brother (11), and my little sister (4). We're staying in downtown Houston. Any suggestions on where we can go? Nothing too pricey please!

Listen to Konswayla...she's right on the money...and don't go through "The Great Mall Tour" or you'll miss everything Houston has to offer. A mall is just a mall. Also I would suggest a visit to Space Center Houston, especially for those ages. Lots for all ages and even for the adults. You should set aside at LEAST a half day to see it all. If you are only staying the weekend, the traffic will tie up much of your time, unless you stay near downtown. There are a lot of things to do in that area, including free stuff. Zoo -under $10 person (a whole day's worth there, lots for the little ones). Next to the zoo you'll find Miller Theater - free live performances of song, dance, music, theatre. Next to that - Hermann Park - free, and pack a lunch, save money! All the museums are in the same area, walking distance even. Childrens' museum has a nominal fee, Museum of Natural Science (part of it is free; IMAX is about $10 /person) , Holocaust museum free, Museum of Fine Arts ?$, and downtown is full of theatre attractions, ballet and symphony. Some street festivals go on, concerts, there was some construction going on for a park at Buffalo Bayou, but I haven't been there. Of course, you could get up really early and beat the traffic to Galveston, about 45 minutes from downtown. Check out one of their websites. So much to do there! Schlitterbahn Waterpark might even let you take your own food and drinks in. You can ride the trolley from the beach to the shops on the strand and harbor and avoid the traffic. There's a ghost tour, a tall ship to explore, beaches, a free ferry ride (much, much quicker if you park your car and then ride the ferry, no waiting!) You can watch for porpoises from the front of the ferry and feed the seagulls by hand from the back of the ferry. The kids will love that! Kemah is loaded with people. Eat at Joe's Crabshack or the Cadillac Bar and grill for front row seats on the water and watch the boats go by. Check the websites. Lots to do there too and it's all in walking distance. Great peoplewatching. You will love Houston if you have a plan. Get your swimsuits and sunblock ready!

Galveston Texas is just 45 miles down the road, and is one of the best kept secrets in Texas. That is because we really want to keep it for ourselves, but if anyone says anything about you being there just tell them we sent you. This is a wonderful are for all ages ranging from the docks to the museums. The cobble stone streets will make you go down memory lane. The university of Texas Medical Branch is there and they have areas that you can also visit. If time would permit I would suggest that you spend a night at the Flag Ship hotel. This is built out over the water and is great for young and old, you will feel like you are on a ship. There are bicycles and other forms of travel available. Before I leave you I have to tell you that the fishing is very good and the beaches are hard to beat. Have fun

The galleria is also a lot of fun. If you are from somewhere with out water, Galveston is nice, but if you are from like florida, Galveston is not spectacular. It is nice though and you can go walk around on the strand, which is downtown Galveston. There are also tunnels for shopping in down town. The space center is about 20 minutes from Houston if you are interested in NASA

Malls are the best places to be. Sharptowns Mall has good restaurants with places with top branded clothing. First Colony Mall is my personal best mall out of Houston with tons of different stores you can go to and have fun with bunch of place to eat. West Oaks Mall is a alright mall but you'll live the skating rink they have there. The Zoo is a good place to be with paying admission of $10 with animals and entertainment. If you head to Galveston you must go to Schlitterbahn with tons of great water rides. In Galveston you can go to the beach which swim all day long and spend time with your family.
