Housing is probably about as cheap as you will find in any major metro area in the US. Try www.realtor.com and see if you can find something which will suit your family housing wise. Taxes on real estate are due at the end of the year. The rates vary depending on where you live in the area. Car expenses--well, you need to get a Texas Drivers License and get auto insurance to drive. Every type car has a slightly different tax rate and every county has a slightly different rate. Try http://www.allstate.com/ or http://www.statefarm.com/ as you can get both home owners (or renters) and auto insurance through them. Groceries... I have no idea what your family eats, but I can tell you that if you stick to a good standard market, the prices will be pretty fair. I do not know how to compare grocery rates in Malaysia to grocery rates here. Water and gas are through providers assigned to your area. However, when it comes to telephone service, cable television feed, and electricity, you can pick and choose whom you wish to do business with. For electricity, go here to see some of your choices: http://www.powertochoose.org/ For phones, you need to know where you will live to know who owns the phone lines. That is because some companies cannot provide phone service in all areas. For television feed, check these out: http://comcast.com/default.cspx (cable) and http://www.dishnetwork.com/?WT.mc_id=OWDDSH&utm_source=vanity&utm_medium=direct&utm_campaign=dish.com (for satellite) . Hidden expenses might be something like trash pick up which is through a company assigned to the area where you live. Public schools in the area vary depending on exactly where you live. They are broken into districts and although similar, no two are exactly alike. Our public schools are free, but there are expenses like workbook fees or gym uniform expenses. Some schools in the region require standardized dress while others do not. Schools are really something which you will not know for sure until you find out where you will live. I hope that helps.

Houston is a very cheap city and a very expensive city at the same time. You can mitigate the expensive factors if you act smartly. Housing is probably the cheapest in the US for a Top 20 big city with a good economy (were not talking about places like Detroit and Cleveland with 20% unemployment and copper-gutted houses being given away for the back taxes). Food is reasonable, eating out is reasonable, yard labor is reasonable (as long as we don't build that border fence TOO high), etc.
