A good place to live outside of Raleigh,NC?

Where is a great place to live right outside houston? good elementary schools?

  • my family is moving to the houston area sometime next year, my son will be 4. anyone know of some great elementary schools and good neighborhoods to live in?

  • Answer:

There are places within Houston city limits that compare quite well (or are even better) than suburbs outside of city limits. I live in an area known as Memorial, which is partially conprised of a small network of cities called "The Villages" but also part within Houston city limits. The schools are Spring Branch Independant School district, which are excellent south of Interstate 10. For example, my area feeds to Rummel Creek Elementary School, which was rated "Exemplary" by the state. Look for neighborhoods like Wilchester, Wilchester West. I also grew up in the neighborhood, which has little crime, nice homes, and great families. For the price of a home in the northeast or west coast, you could easily afford a home in the Memorial area (especially the west part of Memorial). Stay out of Alief. Stay out of parts of Conroe. (Conroe would be an awful commute to downtown, too). Find out where you and your spouse (or whoever the breadwinner shall be) will work and find someplace reasonably close.

Definitely in the suburbs -- Houston ISD is not the best school district. Sugarland, Pearland, Cypress-Fairbanks, Conroe, Spring Branch, Katy, Alvin, Alief, Fort Bend ... any of these are great.

How about San Antonio. It just outside Houston (4 hours) and avoids all of the Houston traffic nightmares. San Antonio has some of the best elementary school in the state (North East ISD, Northside ISD, Judson ISD). Almost any neighborhood is good. Yes, there are some bad one but many many good ones all around the city.

Sugarland, Champions Area, & Katy are all nice and have good schools.

I would first find out where the new job will be. After that then finding a nice safe neighborhood will be easier to locate. The last thing you want to do is commute an hour plus every day.

I grew up in Conroe area - a little town called Grangerland and the Elementary school has always been really good (They just renovated too) it was close enough to walk to. It has grown a lot since then though.

Deer Park, Texas, on the East side of Houston. Great schools!

Hey there. We moved here early last year to be near my wife's parents and help them through their 'elder' years. At the time I worked near the 290/610 interchange and (still) live south of Tomball (249/Spring Cypress). That puts us in the Tomball ISD, and specifically the Lakewood Elementary School which has been top rated for 8 (I think) years running. It's a great area to live/work/play, and not too far from Houston proper. However, if the work site is on the other side of downtown, I'd look somewhere south. My trek to work would always come to a screeching halt exiting the 8 tollway onto the US 290 parking lot. All told, my 22 mile drive would take 90 minutes during peak times (65 once I figured out that surface streets were faster than 290). Before you buy, do a reality check on the commute during the peak times.

NYC. Oh you said outside? I would pick Austin.
