How well is the job market?

How is the job market in Houston, TX?

  • People I know who've lived there or have visited keep saying the job market's good, jobs are plentiful, etc. I'm planning on moving there in about a month. I've been applying for jobs like crazy for about a month, but haven't received a single callback. I'm using my mom's address (who is already in Houston) on my resume. When I look at job boards it does seem like there are TONS of jobs there compared to what I see when I look here in Chicago. But, when I apply for jobs here. I send out 10-15 resumes and get at least one call, usually I tend to get calls all week when I send out several resumes. I'm sure I've sent way more than that for jobs in Houston. But not a single call. How is the job market? What's the typical amount of time it takes to find a job? I'm looking for administrative work and I have a bachelor's degree and about 3 years of admin experience.

  • Answer:

There are jobs available, but still they can be hard to get. Most jobs go to people who know someone to recommend them to the person hiring for the job. EDIT: I do not mean this negative, but know people with college degrees as well who haven't been able to find jobs for more than 2 years. Of course they are discouraged and some are working for minimum wage in jobs that don't utilize their education or skills at all. I'd seriously interview for a job in Chicago to at least have some employment. Although I can understand you wanting to move, the idea of plenty of jobs is great except for the fact that too many people are out of work here as well. And the person who gave me the thumbs down might know some secret. I'm hoping they will return and share it with you.

Job market in the metropolitan area is good. You have good qualifications but sending out resumes without following up in person is difficult anywhere. Getting hired through temp agencies and this state affiliated agency http://www.texasworksource.com/ is the best way to enter. Your local unemployment/work source agency can link you, assist in securing a position before you move. They pay for the phone calls, faxes, etc. Job rates reflect the housing/cost of living here and getting a job within 4-6wks is normal. Once you find a job I would suggest you bring the minimum with you and reside in something temporary in nature like In Town Suites which is a chain of residential hotels. The pace here is race track but the people are generally open and friendly. Population is majority immigrant/hispanic. An interesting mix of cultures and the weather is extremely humid and it is already summer here. Leave your winter clothing behind, just bring sweaters to wear in the air conditioned offices.
