Which are hardest to get into and which are easiest to get into? No community colleges though please haha which ones are in the prettiest areas? And does each island have it's own college or is it just like a whole state thing where the college is in one place? Any other info you think would be good to tell will be appreciated too haha Thanks!

  • Answer:

Oahu has the most four-year colleges: -University of Hawaii at Manoa-http://www.uhm.hawaii.edu/ -Chaminade University-http://www.chaminade.edu/ -Hawaii Pacific University (two campuses)-http://www.hpu.edu/ -BYU Hawaii-http://www.byuh.edu/ -University of Hawaii West Oahu-http://westoahu.hawaii.edu There's also specific types of four-year colleges on the island, but they're not important. You can find them where you live probably. Anyway, the flagship university (and the most popular), for Oahu and neighbor island residents is the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH or UH Manoa, for short). My entire family went there, I go there, and my friends do as well. Lots of international as well as US mainland students so it makes for a good mix of people. I don't know about BYU Hawaii, but on a tuition scale Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific are at the top of list for most expensive because they're both private colleges. UH Manoa is third. Oahu is mostly city, so if you want to get away from it all then the University of Hawaii at Hilo (http://uhh/hawaii.edu), on the Big Island, is where you should go. But UH Manoa is located in Manoa Valley, which is a nice place. (If you haven't noticed I'm pitching for UH Manoa). :-) Note: I don't know which "undergraduates" the first poster has talked to, but when I walk around I see a lot of school pride for UH Manoa. Students do wear school hats, shirts, sweaters, etc. We do have school pride, and so do the alumni (I see UH decals, bumper stickers, and license plates on cars). I have school pride, for sure.

The UH system includes three universities, one college, and several community colleges. UH Manoa (the flagship campus) UH-West Oahu UH-Hilo (on Hawaii) UH Maui College (promoted from a community college this spring) Most of the community colleges are on Oahu (Windward is probably in the prettiest setting of those), though some are on Kauai and Hawaii. There are branches of Maui College on Molokai and Lanai, as well as out on the remote Hana side of Maui. In addition, there are a few private colleges, including Hawaii Pacific University (for-profit), Chaminade U. (Roman Catholic), and Brigham Young University-Hawaii (Latter Day Saints). None of the universities in Hawaii are particularly difficult to get into. Most--but by no means all--academic achievers from Hawaii tend to go to college in North America. I've been told by UH undergraduates that they don't wear UH t-shirts because they don't want people to know that they go there. Also, conventional wisdom has it that a person who goes to college in North America is likely to command a higher salary in Hawaii than someone who graduated from one of the local colleges or universities. For one thing, academics are more rigorous. In certain Native Hawaiian and Local communities, an exam to study for or a paper to write will never be a legitimate excuse for not drinking beer with family and friends for hours. They pretty much have to go away to college if they are going to work hard. The cost of living also tends to be much cheaper in North America. High real estate prices mean even Pizza Hut and Burger King go out of business across the street from the largest university campus in the state. Campus life is just so much more vibrant at hundreds of campuses in North America. If I had a college bound son or daughter, there are a few reasons why I would let them go to college in Hawaii. One is if they wanted to study one of the real academic strengths at a local university: Pacific Island Studies, Kmher, astronomy, or marine archaeology, for instance. If they could not bear to be away from family/friends/local food/surf/their canoe club or halau hula. Hmmmm...those might be the only reasons.
