Recommendations on Hawaiian and Hawaiian sounding songs?
-
I am going to Hawaii on my honeymoon (will be there for 12 days!) and would like to make a really good playlist of Hawaiian songs (I really like IZ kamakawiwo'ole) and songs with a Hawaiian sound (Jason Mraz’s I’m Yours and Train’s Hey Soul Sister are what I mean). I’m also planning on using some of the Elvis tunes from Blue Hawaii just because I like them, they are fun. Jack Johnson is Hawaiian, so I’ll use some of his songs too. Based on the sound of the artists above, can anyone recommend any other good songs for my honeymoon playlist? Thanks!

Answer:
I would look up Kealii Reichel--his music is amazing. He sings mostly in Hawaiian, but has songs in English. There are also a lot of slack key CDs, and that is good background music. Also look for Jawaiian, what we call Jamaican-style Hawaiian, awesome!

Iz was great; it's a shame he died so young. I also like Hawaiian slack key guitar music. It has a very mellow and relaxing sound (see first link). I like Patrick Ki too. He's a native Hawaiian now living in Arizona and his style was strongly influenced by the slack key style (see second link). Reggae is very popular in Hawaii too, so it wouldn't hurt to throw in a little Bob Marley if you like his style. I know he was Jamaican, but a lot of Hawaiians love his music.

Reggae is popular here, yes, as the other posters have stated. A lot of local bands use have that reggae sound: Natural Vibrations, for one. There are various musicians who sing in both Hawaiian and English, like Iz. Here's a short list: -Keali'i Reichel -Raiatea Helm -John Cruz You must put Jake Shimabukuro on your list. He plays the ukulele but takes it to a whole other level. You won't hear Hawaiian music coming from him, but what he has in his repetoire is amazing. Big fan of his.

Iz is great so yes anything by him. You can also try anything by keali'i reichel, he's got a great voice and I listen to him when I miss Hawaii. Maunaleo is one of my personal favorites. Anything by Jason mraz, not just I'm yours, and colbie callait songs sound great too. Bob Marley has reggae which is VERY popular in Hawaii. Try kid cudi too
