When is the cheapest time to travel to Hawaii?

What time do I need to go to bed when I travel to Hawaii?

  • I am traveling to Hawaii next month. I live in Louisiana and it will take about 8 and 1/2 hours to about 9 hours to get there. I know I will be very jet lagged. We leave at 8:30am (my time) and get to hawaii at 2:35pm (hawaii time). My question is what time should we go to bed, in hawaii, so that we will be on a normal schedule the next day? I would like to make the most out of our time their. Should I try to stay awake the whole time on the plane or should I take a nap?

  • Answer:

You could nap on the plane. Stay awake the whole day when you get there, getting lots of sunlight, to help reset your internal clock. Go to bed at a reasonable time, say 10PM. One thing you might try, if your schedule will allow it, is to start resetting your internal clock by changing the times you go to sleep, i.e., stay up later and get up later, to match Hawaiian time.

sleep on the plane, and you'll be fine.

When you get there, take a dip in the pool and hang out in the sunshine - walk on the beach, etc. This will help you to stay awake a bit longer. Be sure to wear sunscreen as you will be closer to the sun than you are in Louisiana. Eat light the first day. Go to bed about 10:00 pm. Next morning, get up, have breakfast, and go out into the sun again for a while. Being in the sunshine for a while will help you reset your body clock. I usually take one extra day off when I come home in order to do the same thing there. Hang out in the sun for an hour or so to reset my body clock. You will find that going home is when you will notice the jet lag.

Sleep on the plane!!! and then in Hawaii, go to bed (or try to) around 10p.m. or 11 by the latest!! You will have fun, believe u me!!

If I were you, I would try to nap on the plane a bit (since you'll be getting up pretty early) and then go to bed at a reasonable hour once you get here. You may still feel a bit jeg lagged but coming over will be much better than going back since you'll be gaining time coming west and losing time going east. Happy travels!

I think tonalc and gloria are wrong. If anything, you should try (to the extent possible) to keep your body clock on Louisiana (CDT) time, which is 5 hours ahead of Hawaiian Daylight Time. Jet lag is always a problem anytime you're traveling through five different time zones, but it's always a heck of a lot easier traveling from east-to-west than it is the other way around. The reason is that you're "gaining" time instead of "losing" it. When you first arrive in Hawaii, you'll find that you'll be getting tired and needing to go to sleep at an early hour, but you'll also be able to wake up at an early hour. You know what they say, early to bed, early to rise... I would recommend trying to stay on Louisiana time just to be able to deal with the jet lag upon your return to Louisiana, which will be the real problem of your trip. If you let yourself get acclimated to Hawaiian time then you'll have a hard time falling asleep at night when you return to the mainland. Also consider yourself lucky that you have a flight which leaves at a good time of morning (10:30) and arrives in Hawaii at a good time of afternoon. You'll see plenty of daylight. Some flights from the mainland don't arrive in Hawaii until 10:30 at night.
