I have a question about Hawaii.

Hawaii living question?

  • In general do you need a car to live in Hawaii to get to supermarkets/walmart stores and such? In australia here i can walk to everything i need, basically no more than two streets away for anything. Just wanted to know what it is like in Hawaii, as i am thinking to move there. Not so sure where, but someplace nice with good stores. I know most places in the states have malls and such in suburbs, but you cant live overly close to them like you can here. No way walking there to buy anything would be feasible without a car, but never seen Hawaii. Thank you for the help

Depending on where you live on the island of Oahu it may be a good idea to have a car or at least a moped. If you live in Honolulu you can get around by bus, but you will have to plan every move you make to get where you need to be on time. Keep in mind that it is very expensive here. According to the NY Times they recently ranked Hawaii as having the highest rents in America. Unless you have a steady supply of money (alot of it) you will be getting an apartment in a place like Makiki or Kalihi. That means it will be very noisy at all hours with car alarms going off and people yelling. There are many other areas that are much quieter and nicer, but they will cost big dollars. Look at Craigslist for housing. It is pretty much like the mainland here, but with a third world essence. Also, check out the local news online. Good luck!

It would be a good idea to have a car in Hawaii Nothing is close together!!! But you do not that to have one the bus goes over the whole Island and is a LOT less the a car. The only way you would able to walk to the shops and what not would be to live on Waikiki side and that a lot of money.

Yes hawaii is good. I live there. I suggest if your going to school then go to a private school or moanalua or aiea. Depending on where you live you can walk but if you live like windward and that kind you might have to drive but usally theers malls.

If you live in the city, you don't need a car. If you did have a car you won't drive it much because - hey, your on an island. There are places where you will need a car just like some places in Australia. And don't buy the Hawaiian Rail Pass... What a rip off that is.
