I have a question about Hawaii.

A question for residents of Hawaii who watch Hawaii Five-O?

  • I was just wondering does Hawaii look like that tv program Hawaii Five-O. I live in Australia and I have never been to Hawaii so I just wondering if the tv show, shows what Hawaii really looks like.

  • Answer:

All the scenery is real, however, they really screw up geography, place names, and local culture. As with many of the TV shows filmed here, the characters will be driving down a street and suddenly be 20 miles away in a completely different town. The speed limits and traffic would make it improbable if not impossible to traverse the island the way it shows up on screen. They may be filming a scene on the windward coast of O'ahu but claim they are on another island such as Moloka'i. None of the 4 primary actors are from Hawai'i so their pronunciations of Hawaiian words sound odd or just plain wrong. McGarrett is totally unbelievable as a "local" but that's TV. We're glad for the boost in the local economy.

Hawaii Five-0 is filmed here, so yes, that's what Hawaii really looks like.

It's filmed in Hawaii, so it generally looks like that - at least a lot of the natural stuff. Even in the first episode where I think it said they were in Korea at some point was Hawaii. However, beyond that a lot of things that I saw in early episodes (before I stopped watching) were totally off. The social dynamics aren't like that. The police don't look or act like that. The local "bad guys" were obviously brought in from L.A. They will say they're in one place on the show when they're actually in some place else. And so on. Basically, when Hawaii is the backdrop, yes it looks like that. But anything they can make up to make an exciting TV show is just that -- "made up" for a dramatic TV show. It's sort of like if you let a bunch of kids loose in your back yard to run around playing make believe -- yes, it's what your back yard sort of usually looks like, but they brought in the cardboard box over there that they claim is a space ship and people don't really run around in your back yard firing laser guns all day long. And oh, what they say is "Mars" is just Mrs. Wilson's backyard next door instead.

It captures Honolulu and some beach areas of Oahu but, the Hawaii where the people are fewer or absent, no, not at all.
