Where are the best summer waves in Hawaii?

Are the waves in Honolulu, Hawaii reasonably big in the summer?

  • Answer:

We get some summer swells, usually on the south shore, which is otherwise 1-3' most of the year. It can get to 4-6' if there is a big storm in the south, as there was last month. It was great to head out to Point Panic and see the downtown Execs pulling up with their surfboards to catch a few waves before heading to the gym and work! Edit: the above is for Honolulu proper, if that is what you mean by Honolulu, Hawaii. If you actually mean outside of Honolulu, it just depends on the weather, but you can see 6' waves at various times on the North Shore (Sunset Beach, Waimea, etc.).

Well you know, that depend on what you call big, ok? You know for some people, 6' on face big, yeah? Othas, not think big till at least 10-12', yeah? So, can you find good rideable wave most of time hea Hawaii? Sure, no problem just gotta know where to look, ok? And by the way, north shore Oahu not that big in summer, but sometime really nice 4-6 at place like Sunset, and you know, that a great place to surf, but not for beginner, should be intermediate at least, ok? So, come, enjoy, you gonna have great time, if you tourist and need board, you can rent all ova place, Halieva town gotta lotta place to rent, and have great instruction, so don't be too proud, get couple lessons, make you enjoy water mo betta, ok?

No. The waves in Honolulu are FLAT, most of the year. Now on the other hand if you go outside of the city of Honolulu and go to the North Shore of Oahu, the island, you will find large waves in the winter time. In the summer time it is very calm.

I've never seen big waves in Honolulu/Waikiki (South shore). There is also a breakwater that prevents them from making it to shore. The big ones are on the North and/or West side (opposite side) of the island. Makaha, Waimea Bay, and such.

The north shore waves are always too big for an amateur surfer. The waves are large because they travel thousands of miles across the Pacific gathering strength until they are pushed up by the Hawaiian Islands. So yes they are large even in the summer.
