How to tell if a tsunami is coming?

Does Hawaii stow away their sand when a tsunami is coming?

  • I watched Hawaii 5-O today and in this episode there was a tsunami coming. Turned out to be a false alarm, but that's besides the point. There was a clip that showed people putting the sand in bags. At the end there were tons of the bags piled up and they all had sand in them. So do they really do that? Pack the sand away when a tsunami is coming? I heard the sand there is soft like flour, which I would think probably is worth saving. So is it true?

  • Answer:

Most of the sand isn't of the consistency of flour. They're not saving the sand. It's something that happens in most beach communities when there are risks of flooding. People fill the bags with sand from the beaches, and then use it to line places that are likely to flood. The sand absorbs water that comes in and then helps divert it, kind of like a mini wall. It would help in low-level flooding like can happen with some storms, but for anything like a real tsunami it's usually kind of pointless. And if anything, a lot of sand is likely to get somehow "lost" in the process, not saved.

They weren't stowing the sand. They were putting sandbags around buildings to protect them from high water, just as they do here when there is danger of a flood. PS - I love Hawaii 5-0, too!

In the event of a tsunami, it is pointless because the waves are so strong that they will wash away a lot of things in their path. In that episode of Hawaii 5-0, sand bag use was just a plot device intergral to the story. Sandbags are used when there is danger of flooding, such as unusually heavy rains, as in Iowa City, far from any beach. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25020185/ns/weather/t/hundreds-ordered-flee-homes-iowa-city/

lol sandbags to prevent flooding they do that on the mainland too, in alabama, san antonio texas and other places that have a coast

No no no, you have it all wrong. The cut out the dried up coconuts preferably into halves and store them in there. Then the put the haves together and wrap them up with seaweed and store them until the weather settles in. Then dump out all the sand using seagulls by taping the coconuts to there claws and releasing them. Then the cycle repeats.
