When is the cheapest time to travel to Hawaii?

Cheapest time to travel to Hawaii?

  • My husband and I want to travel to Oahu, Hawaii (on a budget), some time in the next few months for about 7-10 days or so (some time between Oct and Jan but we are flexible). Does anyone know when is the best time to travel there? Where would be the best place to find cheap flights? Would it be cheaper to buy air tickets separately and then find a hotel/condo/rental apartment to stay in or to buy a package that includes flight and hotel? Any ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks!

The holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas are popular and thus more expensive, but otherwise things can vary with fuel prices and things like that. Demand can also shift unpredictably between east (Japan especially) and west (mainland). Mainly get on sites like tripadvisor, expedia, and orbitz and plug in info and see what comes up. And sign up for the email lists of any airlines you might fly so you can learn when there are specials. You'll generally get better flight deals if you can go midweek on a redeye. And you'll often find the best deals are packages including airfare, hotel, and rental car at once. There can be a bit of a travel lull as the summer ends and school starts, so you might find fewer crowds and better deals around September and October. The big wave season starts happening around November and December, so if you want to see things like that you should maybe come then, but otherwise people escaping the cold and coming for the big surf watching can make travel more complicated then. If budget is the number one priority, I'd probably target sometime around October when the lull happens. And alternatively, I personally think December with the Christmas lights and bigger waves and that can be a neat time, with the lights beginning I believe the first Saturday in December. But you'd need to plan well ahead since others will be coming for stuff like that too. You may also find a good tourism slot right after the Thanksgiving crowds leave but before the lights start -- again if budget is the number one thing. One of the big decisions is balancing between budget as absolute #1, or if you can give at least a little there to add a little more "special" stuff to your trip, like holiday lights.

www.hawaiianair.co there are RT tickets for $360 each right now and I just paid $195 for my daughter one way back to LAX from Honolulu. Check ticket prices late at night and Monday mornings and just watch for deals. The absolute cheapest time to fly and stay in Hawaii is spring Mar-June. Prices go way up for the summer. I found the hotels I wanted and then searched the web for discounted bookings. We stayed at Queen Kapiolani x from the zoo very near Waikiki south beach (where the free concerts are) for $79 a night for the $129 room. www.tripadvisor.com has visiters real pictures of the hotels and sites like www.kayak.com are great for getting cheap rates. I also used www.priceline.com and got a 3 day car rental for $70 plus tax. www.booking.com has cheap hotel rates too.

= Hawaii has only two seasons: "summer" between May and October and "winter" between October and April. The peak season of Hawaii is from mid-December to April. The weather is very good during the peak season and hotel prices and airfares are usually gone up. If you want to go during the peak season, make sure to make reservation well in advance.
