Me & my hubby are planning 7 night hawaii trip.Flying from philadelphia to Maui Airport(OGG)?
-
renting car from airport for an hour drive to our hotel in west maui (kaanapli & luhiana). staying for 5 nights. dropping car off at airport, planning to take taxi from airport to superferry for honululu. taking taxi from there to rent car from honolulu airport, staying in Doubletree Alana Hotel Waikiki for 2 nights. taking flight back to phl from honolulu airport after returning rental car. DOES it all sound ok?? i m done planning & going to buy plane tickets, reserve hotels & rent cars tomorrow. Dropping car at OGG and picking another rental car from HNL seems a bit going out of the way but i can't think of any other way. Do suggest me what is good to see there as a couple... just going to relax. first time visit....

Answer:
All of your plans sound great EXCEPT the part about the Superferry. I have spoken to a few people who have taken it, and they said that most people on the boat were seasick from the rough ride. In addition, many days the Superferry is cancelled because of rough seas. At present, it isn't running at all because it is out for repairs. So I suggest you fly from Maui to Honolulu and forget about the Superferry. Lots of information about Maui sights, restaurants, hotels, activities and more is at http://www.mauihawaii.org

Looks good to me. Spending a lot of time on Maui is the way to go. Take a dinner cruise if you can from the whaling village there. Drive the road to Hana and stop everywhere you can to look at the waterfalls. Rent a convertible. Eat pineapple. Eat at cheeseburger in paradise. On Oahu, see Pearl Harbor and talk to a WWII vet there. Visit the North Shore. Eat at Duke's on the beach. Visit the pink hotel. Climb Diamond Head (in the morning). Go to the Dole Pineapple plantation and eat more pineapples.

Yeah, they're talking about putting the Superferry in drydock. Controversy or no controversy, the thing just plain ain't running most of the time. If you buy your interisland ticket ahead of time, you can probably fly for under $50 apiece. Don't rule out the 9-seater Pipers and Cessnas--you get better photos from those. Just don't eat before you fly because if you use your "aloha bag", you are asked to take it with you when you deplane. Then you can take a rental car shuttle from the airport. Only easy! Go see 'ulalena in Lahaina, and go snorkeling!

Why don't you bring your rental car on the Superferry and return it in Honolulu? Of course, you should check to see if the superferry is operating since it's currently in drydock until at least April (it's been in drydock longer than it's been sailing!). Let's see.....on Maui......a must see is the sunrise at Haleakala. Bring your blanket from the hotel and plan to be up there by 4 am. The sunrise is breathtaking but it's very cold up there until the sun comes up and then it's HOT! Try some Maui Gold pineapple. It's low acid makes it very good and since Maui is the only island still producing pineapple, it's fresh too! Check out the Maui Ocean Center. It's a great aquarium with lots of neat displays and amazing animals. Take the road to Hana. It's a long drive but the views are amazing. Make sure you switch drivers at the turnaround so that you both get to enjoy the view. Hope that helps......have a great time......and happy travels!

All of the above information is good....the only thing left out is that a car on Maui is a good idea...but there is Sooooo much traffic on Oahu (Honolulu) I wouldn't even bother with a car...Public Transportation is everywhere...they will take you whereever you want to go...My kids and I were on Oahu for 10 days last July w/o a car and it was great...then we wento Maui for 11 days and rented a car..alot of fun...Have a great time.

I live in Maui. I think Lahaina is really nice, but it's pretty hot and dry. You guys will probably have really nice sunsets unless they weather changes, if you guys plan on surfing, Lahaina is one of the best places to learn. I wouldn't recommend the superferry though too much controversy(my personal thought). In Oahu the Doubletree hotel is pretty nice, it's in the heart of Waikiki so you'll have fun walking around at night. They have lots of entertainment and the people are really friendly. This sounds like a good plan to me! Hope you guys enjoy! If you have any further questions about Maui or anywhere else in Hawaii, feel free to e-mail me. Mahalo!
