What are some good places to go fishing in Long Island?

Any locals from the Waianae Coast. What are good places to go snorkeling and spear fishing? (3 prong spear)?

  • I just moved to Nanakuli from Waimanalo. I used to go snorkeling at Kaiona Beach Park, and by the UH research pier. My son would go spear fishing in both places and around Baby Makapu'u. I don't know the waters on this side of the Island, and would like to know where would be a good place to go. I am not a super strong swimmer, so I want to avoid anywhere there are strong currents or bad cross currents. I love the water, but have been hesitant to get in over here.

Across from maybe coronets, but the currents can be bad there if the waves kick up. Leeward side is strange. You could have prefectly calm day in the morning on Nanakuli beach and by afternoon the waves could be smashing on the shore. I have seen it at canoe races in Nanakuli. Maili beach is the same. The water can turn nasty and if you don't know how to deal with it, you have a problem. I was lying on the beach by pokai beach park aways from the bay area in the direction of town where they is a cove. A mother and her child was wading in the water. In a matter of seconds, they were swept out towards the ocean. I ran in and bought the child in and a guy with his shepherd help bring in the lady. I was raised a kid on that side of the island, but that was long ago. I eventually lived out in Kailua where my mom and the rest of my family is today. The waters are a lot different than the Kailua side. There is a cove down by moua street in Makaha. My aunt used to own the house that was right on the point. It can be calm in there and then it can break pretty big. I would not say there are a whole lot of protected waters like the Windward side. They used to dump the sewer on in the water many years ago off pokai bay and a lot of fisherman used the pokai bay and now waianae harbor. I don't think it helps for dive fishing close to shore. I would not go spear fishing off the power plant area. There are sharks there. We used to bottom fish off the coast of the power plant for menpachi and akuli. We always had problems with sharks. We used to bottom fish for opelo towards the makaha beach area. A lot of people, mostly old japanese people, used to fish off the breakwater wall with long poles. You can go out toward Yokohama, but it can break big there too. We used to go out all the way to Kaaina point and pick opihi, but I don't think there is opihi there anymore. I don't know. I am talking a long time ago. Be careful, the ocean can change drastically on that side of the island.
