I need advice on moving to Oahu!?
-
I'm moving to Oahu next summer (Army relocation) and I need advice. I'm mainly concerned about what areas are safe for a young couple to move to. I hear this and that about certain areas, but haven't gotten definitive answers from anyone. The most affordable housing seems to be in Waianae, but I hear that area is full of homeless people and creeps. How is the Ewa Beach area? I also have 2 dogs, and am having a difficult time finding pet-friendly housing. Anyone who has advice on moving to Oahu- please answer! Your help is much appreciated. Mahalo!

Answer:
Hey welcome to Hawaii, ok? Best bet gonna be on base, if you can get, ok? Cause gov. subsidized housing cheaper, and most alla them really nice, ok? Also, not have to go far for work, ok? If you don't wanna live onna base, at least consider rent apt. for while, then find area you wanna live, ok? MY SUGGEST STAY WAY FROM WAIANAE AREA, cause just not safe, ok? Also, traffic bad go ova there, so don't go there, ok? Lotta great place to live hea, and you gonna love it hea, ok? Peace and aloha to you!

Base housing is going to be your best bet (are the dogs a banned breed for base housing?). If you are looking for rentals, you should work with your base's office for information on the communities, and leads on pet-friendly rentals. If you are buying, I highly recommend this realtor, Debra Pagan, as she has helped friends get great deals in the right locations on that side of the island. http://bit.ly/qLNV8z Ewa is safer than Ewa Beach. Village Park and Royal Kunia are also safer. You will want to stay close to the Army base, and any schools (public or private), if you or kids will be attending, also list activities you like to do, must haves, must NOT have, and so forth. Maybe post another question with that info so we see it as a new question and check in to answer :).

Just in case you didn't know, it's hard to get dogs to hawai'i. They might have to go through 120 days of quarantine when they arrive.. http://hawaii.gov/hdoa/ai/aqs/info check that site out. It's a pain.. haha but hopefully everything works out for you! :] I'm sure you're already researching a bunch of things, keep on doing it! Last thing you want is to have an unpleasant surprise when you arrive. Good luck & Aloha~

It depends on which base you're going to. If you're at Pearly Harbor, I would suggest staying away from Ewa and Waipahu. Find something in Pearl City or, better yet, on base.

i wanna know how it is to live in oahu is it safe? Yes, it is safe. The violent crime rate is very low, but the property crime rate is higher. I feel safe walking alone most places, most times of day or night. is it fun all year long? If you could be here on vacation all year long, I'm sure it would be. But when you work, have to care for a house & kids, fight traffic, etc. it isn't fun all the time. It's still a good place to live. ARE PEOPLE FREINDLY? For the most part, yes. There can be some tension between "locals" & "mainland haoles", but if you treat others well you usually can get along with most folks. Actually, the people are one of the main reasons I love living here. is it a good place to raise kids cuz i got 2? Yes, I think it is a great place to raise kids. My kids worry about being able to afford living here & both talk about how this is the best place possible to raise a family. most importently do most people and business talk english or hawaiin Folks speak English. Very few people actually speak Hawaiian. Many people speak "pidgin", a local dialect which developed from plantation llife where people who spoke many different languages all needed to be able to communicate. and is it expensive to live there ? Yes, very expensive.

Waianae & Makaha area from a local's point of view is considered the "junk side" of Oahu, while the housing is cheap,... The crime and hooligans that lurk the area is not very desirable. Unless you have very large vicious dogs in your yard. Also there are homeless folks living in the bushes & shelters in the area. Plus the local gangs that roam their territory. Hmmm,... You want a place that allows dogs, well I would have to recommend looking into Ewa Beach, which happens to have a number of older homes with yards. Which are the next to cheapest - because its just around the bend from Waianae. Next I would recommend looking into Waipahu Pearl City, where there are also several older homes & apt/condos that allow pets. Pearl City Upper has older homes with spacious yards, but you will have to shop around, because some homes are going for premium rent while others are just a little dilapidated from neglect by the property owners. But you can still find a deal if you put in some effort. The Kalihi area is kinda sketchy only because there are some parts of Kalihi that isn't ideal, while there are others that are pretty safe, look for homes in the valley, there are some deals to be found there among the older homes down quiet side streets. But there is also the Windward side of the island, where if you don't mind a long commute, you can get nice condos and even some older nice homes for a good deal. Kailua/Kaneohe hosts lots of military families - but the down side if your commute, depending on where you will be stationed. If you're going to be assigned to Schofield Barracks then,... Well pack your cold weather clothes, because is gets chilly there at night. Housing is rather expensive, in Mililani & in Wahiawa local. There is a few out of the way condos, but you would have to shop around, because not all allow pets. Good luck,... If I didn't mention other areas its because those neighborhoods are either much too expensive or there isn't many vacancies. Also I don't reccomend on base housing if you have dogs. Unless you have them inside all the time. On base condos aren't too bad, but in areas there is a waiting list.
