Where/How to meet new ppl. in Hawaii?

  • Hi, I'm 21/m, I'm outgoing/friendly. just got to Hawaii, gonna be here for 8 months, I was wondering where can I meet new ppl. and make new friends in Honolulu? I live near the downtown area near ala moana centre, and I like tennis and water sports, what extra curriculular activities should I do, and where can I go, so that I can meet ppl.? I'm from Canada, asian, and I don't know if the hawaiian people likes ppl. from canada (ppl. that's not from hawaii)? LOL I would really like to make some friends that lives in Hawaii, it would be more fun to experience Hawaii, that way, so let me know if u've got suggestions, really appreciate it, thanks :)

  • Answer:

Ala Moana Beach Park - - - plenty tennis courts all over O'ahu and the core of Honolulu is flat and extremely walkable. Skip the Bus or any sort of vehicle and get walking. Start at Ward Avenue and Ala Moana Boulevard - - - walk to Waikiki - - - you will find miles of beaches, plenty of tennis courts, all sorts of nooks and crannies to explore. If you desire a club atmosphere check out The Honolulu Club along Ward Avenue, at King Street - - - very sports minded crowd. Again, check out The Outrigger Canoe Club in Waikiki, and The Pacific Club on Queen Emma Street. Be open to a friendly smile, just talk story, keep it simple, you make plenty of friends. Have a great time. Peace. PS -- --- Eh, brah get yourself up to The UH - - - The University of Hawai'i Campus in Manoa and the Hawai'i Pacific University Campus downtown on Fort Street Mall on Leeward. THE UH is starting Football Season and The UH Wahine Volleyball Team, women volleyball players, their seasons are just starting - - - even if you HATE football or volleyball games are a great place to socialize and to meet people. And it is High School Football Season, go catch some local games, you meet plenty like minded souls. Have Fun.

I can offer one very good way. But a 21 year old may not like. Go to Church around you. Nearly all the locals attend Church, a big part of many Hawaiians lives. Or get a job part time in one of the many Waikiki night spots or restaurants. You well do fine as long as you do not complain about things in Hawaii in front of locals. Every day there are all types of activates going on involving people your age.

I had a friend that was based in Hawaii and he made quite a number of local friends there and I asked him about it. He mentioned something that was like common sense. 1. Don´t act like a tourist. Learn the ways and mannerisms of the local people. 2. Don´t hang out at the places that are for the tourist. Once you make a friend just be yourself and if your not an a s s hole you should do fine.

Hi, I am currently living in the Philippines and am from Hawaii so I sort of went through the same things. This is just a small list of suggestions that can really help. One thing that I can tell you is that just because people aren't all talking to you at once doesn't mean they aren't watching you to see what sort of person you are. You are new, a stranger, and you neighbors are interested in you. Don't push, just let it happen one person at a time. Don't ever disrespect anyone on the islands. A guy might walk up to you and look like a hobo. Be cautious, but treat him with kindness. Hawaiians often dress down. I saw too many nice people come over and ignore social leaders because they judged a book by its cover. Being Asian puts you in the majority in Hawaii. Get involved in a sport. Even if you aren't the greatest, people will notice the effort. You have great surfing, climbing, diving, snorkeling, kiting. hiking, biking, and another dozen that you can think of. FInd something that interest you and join a group. Accept every invitation. Never talk poorly of another. I am from Maui so it is much more laid back but the same principles apply. People on Maui might be even more involved in some sort of religion than Oahu, but I agree with the other poster who suggested to join a church or any spiritual group. This a huge part of the culture. Just be a nice guy. Be kind to the elderly and offer to help whenever you can. Best Wishes Boz from Maui.
