Where is the best place to stay in Hawaii where you can walk out from your room directly to the beach?
-
My husband and I are going to Hawaii later this month (for 10 days), and his one request is that we stay at least one place where he can "walk directly out of our room onto the beach, sit on the beach all day, and be served tropical drinks!" :-) Any suggestions? He really wants a place where our ROOM (not just the hotel) opens right onto the beach. We're starting out on Oahu, but then we're not sure which other islands we'll be going to - probably either Maui or the big island, but we're open to suggestions. We're not the country-club type, but we just want to be pampered for one day! :-)

My mana'o (message, point of view) comes from someone who attended U. Hawaii Manoa for four years, but spent a mere two nights at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. These are the hotels where I always wanted to stay: My favorite beach in Waikiki is what we call "Kaimana" or "San Souci" beach, in front of the New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel. This is more between Waikiki and Diamond Head, between Kapiolani Park and the Ocean. I've never actually stayed there, but I greatly enjoyed the fundraiser I attended there as a poor but well-connected graduate student. And I can't count the hours I've spent on the beach in front of the Hau Tree Lanai. On the other side of Diamond Head, away from Waikiki in a swanky neighborhood, is the Mandarin Oriental Hotel (locals still call it the Kahala Mandarin). Jack Lord, the star of Hawaii 5-0 lived in the penthouse here for years. If you want to be in the middle of it all in Waikiki, The Moana Surfrider, is now 105 years old and just as elegant. Much farther away, on essentially the northern tip of Oahu, is the Turtle Bay Resort mentioned above. I hear amazing things about the Hilton Waikaloa, but I haven't been to that side of the Big Island...yet. In south Maui, one stays in condos, many of which are apparently on the beach. But when I spend the night in Lahaina, I like to stay at the kitchy, relatively inexpensive Makai Inn. It's on the sea wall, not the beach, but you can fall asleep to the sound of the waves--instead of awakening to the sound of the machine cleaning out the sand traps on the golf course at the Ritz. And that's all I hafta say about that.

Usually at a hotel that is right on the beach. And you would preferably want a ground floor room. The first step down to the beach from the second floor or higher is a real b***h.

I've lived in Hawaii all of my life and can tell you that Mr. Sky made some excellent recommendations. I just want to add that for your one day of pampering, you consider the Four Seasons Hualalai in north Kona on the Big Island. For that "you own the beach" experience, reserve an Executive Suite - Ocean Front. It's not a sand beach but I guarantee you that you won't care. But be warned, pleasure has it's price.

Honolulu: The Hawaiian Hilton is tops.

Ok, this would be my suggestion: On Oahu there is a hotel called The Turtle Bay Resort. http://www.turtlebayresort.com/ They have beach cottages which offer breathtaking views and direct beach access. This hotel is located on the North Shore of Oahu....nearby would be Sunset Beach, the Banzai Pipeline (great place to watch surfing), etc. For the remaining days of your stay, you could do 1 of 2 things. You could go to Maui and check out the Old Lahaina Luau (one of the best of all the islands), shop on Front Street in Lahaina, see the sunrise on Haleakala or just relax and soak in the Hawaiian culture. Or you could go to the Big Island. Keep in mind the Big Island is just that...BIG. It is larger than all the other islands combined. It is very hard to get the full flavor of this island all in a few days. I went there for 2 weeks and didn't see everything I wanted to. But, if you do go there I would stay in the Kailua-Kona area. It is where the sun shines almost every day of the year. You may want to try the Kona Village Resort for your "pampered for one day" experience. http://www.konavillage.com/ It's as close to beach front access as you can get. It is 'Old Hawaiian' at its finest. Whatever you decide to do I'm sure it will be the right decision. There is really no 'bad' place to stay in Hawaii. Most of Hawaii's beauty is in the land, the culture and the natural surroundings. I hope you have a wonderful vacation....

Try The AQUA BAMBOO at closeby Waikiki Beach. I stayed there for a week and I loved it.. The rooms are quaint essential and clean.. i have no complaints.. come out of the hotel the beach is behind you and you can walk just about anywhere to the shops and eateries.
