Should I relocate to Detroit to start a career in Real Estate?
-
I am interested in starting a career in real estate in Detroit. I hear Detroit has a strong housing market and the area is growing. I also hear there is a strong economy and excellent Public Transportation to. Should I relocate to Detroit to start a career in housing real estate? Why or why not?

Answer:
I am from the area, and I would have to say no. Yes, there are a lot of houses on sale, but there is no one to buy them. My sorority sister has put her townhouse up for sale a year ago, and no one has bought it. It's very nice and is located in the middle of downtown. Detroit is in a bad place economically. Also, the public transportation is not good. It is nowhere near Chicago or Cleveland.Pick another city if you want to make money.

Yes. Everything is on sale RIGHT NOW in the Detroit RE market. IE housing prices in some areas are WAYYYYY down with foreclosures. Pick up bargains. Rent. Become a slum lord. Help others to do the same. Its the American way.

I think you need to do some research...the housing market is in the slumps due to the auto industry. There is limited public transportation and a poor economy. You may want to consider a different state to sell real estate in.

Starting a career in real estate anywhere is a complete joke. Have you seen the news or own any stock. You are kidding us right?

I don't know where you got your information, but it probably is very bad info. Detroit, also known as its nickname Motor City, is a terribly depressed area that has taken a huge hit recently and its economic conditions are probably worse than most areas. The auto industry, of which most people in Detroit are connect to, has taken a real beating. It is a "buyers" market and a "buyers" market where there aren't many buyers. Homes are on the market for a long time and have substantial markdowns. Recently, the governor of the state has passed tax increases that will likely further depress the state. She will either not run again next election or get crushed, from what most people are saying. People from Michigan are not happy. The only "good" I've heard from Detroit real estate markets seem to be coming from people with reasons to gain by claiming they are good... The facts prove otherwise. Detroit is still a dump with many major areas of the city reverting back to prairie land. I'd be inclined to say "lost cause" but eventually things level off and start to build back to good. Why anyone would want to move to Detroit is beyond me. The suburbs are decent enough, but Detroit is a hellhole. Detroit is NOT a Chicago or New York.

Who told you these lies about Detroit? What you are saying about Detroit is NOT TRUE. First, Detroit and the Metropolitan Detroit Area is shrinking. Detroit has lost over 50,000 residents in the last seven years and the metropolitan area is in decline. Second, the State of Michigan has the worst economy in the United States. There are NO JOBS AVAILABLE. Residents in Michigan are moving out of state to find better jobs and oppotunity. Finally, The only transportation in Detroit are Gas Gusseling cars you drive around that will eat up your cash. Detroit has a bus system known as SMART but many communities are eliminating the system Detroit has not on ground train system other than the People Mover and there are no trollies. If you want to sell real estate housing in the Midwest, I suggest you try Chicago. The Chicago Metropolitan Area is growing, has excellent mass transportation, a good economy, and could be the host of the 2016 summer olympic games.
