Why does Detroit not have a New Years celebration like many US Cities?

  • All throughout the United States, cities such as New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and Orlando are having New Years celebrations. This usually includes a ball drop, fireworks, and a big celebration. Although many cities have a big festival, Detroit does not have a New Years celebration.Although I use to live in the Detroit area, Detroit had a small gathering to bring in the year 2000 but since then, Detroit does not have a big celebration to ring in the new year. Is there a reason why Detroit does not have a New Years celebration like many cities throughout the United States? You would think that Detroit would have some kind of gathering in Hart Plaza with fireworks and live music to ring in the new year. Is there a reason why Detroit does not have a New Years celebration like many cities throughout the United States? Do you believe Detroit would benefit if they had a celebration like many major US Cities?

    Small city's around Detroit have celebrations, like Mount Clemens http://www.macombdaily.com/articles/2008/12/31/news/srv0000004398793.txt I believe why Detroit choose not to is the cost of overtime for police and firefighters and ems. and the cost of Fireworks is pretty high right now. and most cannot afford to come out and party right now anyway. most people would rather be at the many bars and clubs. Or at Sporting events,, oops I had forgot the Wings play in the Winter Classic tomorrow so no game tonight. Also the Auto Show is coming up and the winter blast so it would also to many events is short period of time.

until they fix the potholes, and do something with the signs on the freeway that are suppose to tell you if there is an accident but instead they say 'over the limit, under arrest' or 'don't veer for deer', they better not spend any money on that shi*t. Plus Detroit's winter blast doesn't even have money and that just started.

The main reason is that there are still a rift from the 1968 Riots. The alienation of the black and white establishments did not heal yet. Maybe in 2009, there will be an improvement of the healing.

Its cold outside. Its a pain to get downtown with the traffic. And like the other guy said. Suburbs and Detroit (whites and blacks) don't get along, and would never work out a deal about paying for this. If they did something nobody would go down there anyways.

I hear downtown Detroit is safe, and there is a lot to do... although due to high crime ( ranked in top 5 for worst city to live) it may not attract too many people.
