Does Detroit have a chance of hosting the 2020 Summer Olympic Games?
-
I was reading on Wikipedia on cities that are considering a bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Detroit has put bids for the Summer Olympics in 1944, 1952, 1566, 1960, 1964, 1968 and 1972 (Seven Times). With Detroit hosting events such as Super Bowl XL (2006) and the NCAA Final Four (2009), Detroit has held many major sporting events. According to Wikipedia, its says that Governor Jennifer Granholm is working the Mayor of Detroit to bring a possible bid to Detroit, do you believe Detroit could host at Summer Olympics in 2020? Why or why not? Keep in mind that if Chicago gets the 2016 Summer Olympics, Detroit and cities that are considering bids for the 2020 Summer Olympics cannot put a bid until at least 2032. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Summer_Olympics The reason why I have this question under Traveling to Detroit is because if Detroit host the Summer Olympics, visitors from all over the world will be traveling to Detroit.

Answer:
Detroit lost the bid for the 1968 Olympics mainly due the economic conditions of the times. They thought Mexico City was a better choice. things haven't improved.

Definitely, Detroit is in a very unstable economic condition and that could effect a lot. Detroit losing the bids for many of those earlier Olympic games (except 1944, and 1952) Detroit was put in a bad a condition in the economy. Although, even though they did host the Super Bowl in 2006 and NCAA Final Four, they all had proper facilities to play those in. The Olympics are a big deal, although if they do improve there economy by say 2012, then this would be a smart move for Detroit. Having the Olympics in Detroit most people think would be a bad thing, although it would boost there economy greatly. It would create jobs for people to set up the facilities, and also travelers from across the world (as you said) would come and boost there tourism. So overall, I think if Detroit could work on there politics and there economy in a few years then they would be a reliable city to host this thing. Really, 10 years can make a difference, but I hope that Detroit does host the 2020 Summer Olympics.

I'm not going to bet anything on that happening. However, many of the types of facilities needed could probably be found within 50 miles of the city already.

No a city needs a lot of money to hold the games and under the circumstances no US city should have the games.

Hard to say. If they can't bid until 2032, then maybe there's a chance Detroit could get it. Would be great for the area because it would mean improvements to highways, infrastructure, etc. but I still think it's foolish to spend billions on a 2 week event. I think the priorities are wrong if the only way for the area to get a much needed facelift is to host the Olympics.

no doubt it would be great for us but i dont think there is any way that we could host the olympics. the olympics is much bigger than the super bowl and final four combined.

Detroit has about the same chance of hosting the Summer Olympics as Antarctica does.
