Why dose'nt Detroit have a good transportation system?
-
I;m sick of the DOT bus where every bus you get on, someone is ready to rob you or curse at/threaten the driver, why dont we have a train/or subway system like in chicago and philadelphia, ive rode on one two years ago, i like it alot better, they are cheaper and unlike detroit, even in the rough parts of chicago you dont have to worry about passengers robbing you there (mainly because of cameras). and its a shame that many residents have to walk in the cold because of the expensive crappy bus service, im tired of it, i only use the bus on occasions, but what about the less fortunate?

Answer:
Watching our empire decline , Racist politicians in Oakland and Macomb? what about the racist politicians in Detroit? Why would Macomb and particularly Oakland counties want anything to do with Detroit. It's not like before when you worked in Detroit but lived in Oakland or Macomb counties. Now most of the jobs are in Oakland county. So they don't need Detroit. Racist? Sounds like common sense to me.

Three reasons Detroit doesn't have good public transportation: 1. The auto companies are headquartered here, and it's to their advantage to "force" everyone to buy a car. (it's political) 2. The UAW also has a lot to gain by "forcing" everyone to buy a car. (again, it's political) 3. The City of Detroit, in my lifetime (over 40 years), has never had the money it's needed to invest in public transportation, and even if they did, it's not likely to be a priority. (did I say it's political?) I agree with you, Detroit owes its citizens a top-knotch bus system. The city owes its citizens lots of things they're never going to get, though.

I dont think that anyone would ever disagree with you, The real question is who is going to pay for it? This is a problem that plagues many cities. For instance (Cleveland, Miami, LA) just to name a few. http://www.crainsdetroit.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080224/EMAIL/898898114/1070 - Here is the start.

First of all of all, its because Detroit at this moment does NOT have the funding that such cities as Chicago, Washington dc and etc have. Second, i never been robbed or even harassed on the bus system in Detroit ever, you can say its because i look intimidating but i highly doubt that's the cause of people choosing not to bother me, it has happened in other cities as well, so don't use one small event from the city of Detroit to make bad judgments about the city. Besides, at least we didn't have any terrorist unleash a mass amount of deadly chemicals or bombs that kill several innocent people, remember when that happened in another metropolitan city, or are you just that focused on picking on the city of Detroit?

The racist politicians in Oakland and Macomb counties refuse to enter into any agreement to create a regional transportation system. They prefer to watch Detroit decay so that they can point fingers at Detroiters and claim that they are somehow subhuman. Plus, Brooks Patterson profits when corporations open offices in Oakland Co. instead of in Detroit.

I've lived in detroit most of my life and the transportation is like the rest of the city dirty ,unsafe, and corrupt. Why would the city officials care whether or not the poor folks have a way to get around cheaply and efficiently they dont use it

They do have a decent bus system, but not so much in the city directly. Rather the investment has been placed into the SMART suburban buses which have expanded, are safer and provide more reliable service with routes traveling throughout the metro area. Check out www.smartbus.org

Currently in Detroit, Detroiters have a saying "It's The Motor City, Get a Car." What they are implying is that since Detroit is the Automotive Capital of the World, there is no need to have a mass transport system. As a former Detroiter myself living in Atlanta, I do believe that Detroit would benefit with a mass transportation system like they have in Chicago of buses and trains but here is why it would not work; 1. Most Detroiters in the metropolitan area do not like the idea of public transportation in Detroit and some cities are eliminating the SMART Bus System. 2. Detroit and the Metropolitan Area is experience a decline in population growth and a train system would cost lots to build and maintain and with many people leaving to other states, I do not believe the current taxpayers would want to pay for a train system. 3. Although there is a bus system, it is not efficient to the needs of the city of Detroit and most people who use this bus system complain that they are not efficient but they do not have any other opportunities to get around. I believe a mass transportation would benefit Detroit and the Metropolitan Area but with a declining population and an unreliable bus system with some cities eliminating the SMART Bus System, I do not see mass transportation improving anytime soon.

crime. simple as that. the city was once a major city in the country that mattered. now, those folks who still live there are reaping the woes of a city that has turned a blind eye to the evil in the streets and still think that the city will come around on its own. the politicians are liberal for the most part so they dont care about stopping crime at the expense of the criminals rights. until the people who live there realize they are the reason for detroits cancer-like demise and start electing conservatives who will run criminals out and take control this city will stay in squallor. quit electing people because they look like you and instead find people that will bust heads and pick up garbage. after that they can work to diversify detroits image from the automotive industry and then maybe they can provide other needed services such as a clean and safe train or bus system.

The politicians and other government employees in Detroit are corrupt. They couldn't care less about Detroit's deterioration. Just look at these articles. Specifically the controversies sections. The city is falling apart. Though I don't know about Philadelphia. I do know that people do get mugged and robbed on the El-Train in Chicago. Especially near Wrigley Field. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwame_Kilpatrick http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christine_Beatty http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ella_Bully-Cummings
