Which city is more dangerous, Detroit or Philadelphia?

How do you feel about Racism in Detroit?

  • Ok ok, I've learned that alot of people caught feelings (told on me) and stuff about my last question, when i was just trying to inform people. so now i ask, how do you feel about racism in the inner-city? because (idk if this is a fact or not) but I heard that Detroit-area as well as Philadelphia-area is the most segregated in the U.S., and living in Detroit (which is 82% black acc. to 2005 Census), most of the white people i came across were very nice, but at the same time most were elderly or around their 40's, and one that was around the corner was a heroin addict (didnt really know at the time). And since i only know very few ppl in the suburbs, ive seen that half of my Detroit peoples which are in their (early 20's) have a big problem with white people, and i dont ask why, but Me, Personally, i dont care what color you are, but how do you feel about racism in inner city Detroit? not just white but Light skin/Dark skinned feuds as well.

  • Answer:

People from the suburbs are afraid to go down to Detroit because of racism. Detroit has once again been voted "murder capitol" and I believe it has something to do with Kwami or whatever the mayors name is. When Archer was mayor, he was trying to make it a safe place for all races to live but now, Kilpatrick is all about the black people and himself. Belle Isle used to be a great place to take your family on a weekend....not any more. Boblo used to be a great place to go with the family until they shut it down. Racism is alive and well in inner city Detroit and its too bad because it used to be a nice place to live.

I live in the detroit suburbs and a strange thing is happening. From what I have seen/experienced, young adult white people are now starting to discriminate against middle easterners much more than our black friends. When asked why, they say the middle easterners are loud, obnoxious, materialistic, aggresive, etc. and in high school like 70 of them stand in the middle of the hallway and wont move out of the way says some younger people i asked. Black people out here seem to feel the same way, so now that blacks and whites have a common enemy, they can be friends. But now there is a new racism problem, just with a new population.

I hate to say it but I agree with the other poster whenever we have a problem with a employee at work they scream.. "you're picking on me 'cause I'm black" management is predominately white no.... they are be reprimanded for not doing their job, stealing, absenteeism, breaking a rule ....etc

What part of Detroit were you in? Try going to grand rapids, you ll really see some racism then, i can honestly say that i haven't seen that much racism in Detroit, but its more like about if you know anyone in certain neighborhoods and not your color. Detroit in my opinion is not segregated but a melting pot.

Well, Detroit is in America, and there's racism in America. Logically, there will be racism in Detroit. Light skinned/Dark skinned feuds you make mention of is nonsense. It's definitely a characteristic, but not one that creates "feuds". I've never seen a girl go "I hate my brother, aunt, and dad because they're dark-skinned, but love my mama, sister and cousin because they're light." That's nonsense.

I live in the suburbs but work on the Detroit border. Detroit has safe areas and areas i wouldn't go near, even with my black friends. It is funny that things caucasians wouldn't consider "racism" are interpreted differently by black people.

shhhhhhhhhhhimhiding

i live just outside of detroit in a very wealthy community that has ALOT of asians as well as caucasions and few blacks. in deriot its like all black and less wealthy.

I think your question is a bit too broad to be useful. But, I'll throw my own feelings out there for you: 1. Is there racial discrimination? You bet! Every group discriminates against every other group. Eastside Whites discriminate against Westside Whites. Black on Black feuding happens (as you say) based on skin tone. I would add that sororities in famous "black" colleges are based on light-skinned black vs. dark-skinned black criterion. Hispanic vs. Middle Eastern discrimination exists. Asian on Asian discrimination exists. You name it any categorized GROUP will have a beef against SOMEONE. And, when you consider that one of those "groups" is the "racially integrated group" then your head will really start spinning. 2. Causes... Did slavery beget racism? Or, did Racism beget slavery? The answer to that question sort of forms the fundamental stance you will take in your understanding of these questions. 3. Leadership.... Detroit clearly needs good leadership. But, one of the main problems with good "African American" leadership is that it must pander to the lowest common denominator to thrive in Detroit. DC went through the same issues with Marion Barry. And, when Anthony Williams started to turn things around in DC with fantastic leadership, he was lambasted as "too white" by African Americans in the press. That sort of foolishness needs to stop. (And Detroit needs to walk away from the "hip hop mayor" as soon as possible) 4. My feelings: I think it sucks. Racism allows Americans to put convenient labels on each other and avoid ACTUALLY considering another PERSON's point of view. You walk down the street and you think that you know what that person's opinion will be based on their skin color or the fact that they are wearing Muslim clothing. When, the reality of the situation is that you don't know until you ask. There is a tee-shirt i saw recently that I like: "Stereotypes are a real timesaver". Funny, right? Far too often this is the un-funny truth that we all live with....
