Where are some good places to camp in Colorado?

Beautiful places to camp with a lake in Colorado?

  • I am looking for a beautiful lake to camp on.. My mother lives in Johnstown which is near longmont, loveland, Greeley.... I would like to use a canoe and camp with beer :) Less than a two to three hour drive is what I really want ..Thanks!!! :) If you know Carter, is that place nice?

    Durango is lovely but not 2 -3 hours from Johnstown. Brainard Lake, Carter Lake, and Grand Lake are all beautiful, within your time frame and allow camping. Colorado State Parks are a good place to start: http://parks.state.co.us/ParksQuickfind/Pages/ParkQuickfind.aspx

Lake Vallecito, near Durango, CO is nice. Lots of trees, a small lake and plenty of wildlife. You can rent boats there and it's a lot of fun because not many people go there. Mostly fisherman. There is primitive camping on one side of the lake (i.e., no flushing, no showers, etc.) and there are places where you can rent cabins or park your RV on the other side. Yes Carter is very beautiful up there also great place to camp!
