Answer:
You might want to decide if you are going to stay in Denver or a destination resort. While Loveland and Eldora are close enough to stay in Denver, they are more "locals" type resorts. I can make Loveland in less than an hr on a good day. In January the road conditions could be an issue. I would suggest Breckenridge for a more down to earth family experience and Vail if your into high class style. Breckenridge has great bus service and nice real downtown. I would take a shuttle up there from DIA (rocky mtn shuttle) and spend my entire vacation there if it were me. Rentals will run you around $30 - $40 per day and the lift tickets will probably be in the neighborhood of $85 per day. If your going for more than 4 days it would be cheaper to just buy a season pass. All the resorts have rental sets but you will get a better deal if you rent from a sport shop in Denver before you head up.

The nearest big ski resort to Denver is Loveland...53 miles and about 1 1/2 hr west of Denver. If you are a beginner, you may want to save money and go to Eldora. There are shuttles that go from Denver to the ski resorts. One of the sites below has places that rent equip. so you can compare them. Those places can also tell you about the shuttles and where to go. Skiing is VERY expensive. There are many other things to do in Denver. The Museum of Nature and Science is fantastic, so is the Denver Art Museum and the Denver Mint( watch them make money).

No ski resorts are in Denver. If you land in Denver International Airport, then you can take Colorado Mountain Express up to Frisco, Colorado, for about $100. From there, take the free Summit Stage public transit system to Copper Mountain Resort, Arapahoe Basin Resort, Breckenridge Resort, or Keystone Resort. Gear is everywhere and about $20 a day. Planning ahead as you are, you should be able to get an entire season pass for less than $500. Arapahoe Basin and Copper Mountain have the cheapest season passes in Summit County, $369. However, you need to buy now, since the prices go up later in the year. Lodging motels are available in Frisco, Breckenridge, Keystone, Silverthorne, and Copper Mountain, depending on where you want to ski. Besides skiing, you may want to try a winter hike. In December, I climbed Quandary Peak, about 14,300 feet, in eleven hours. Micro-brews are available at Pug Ryan's, Breckenridge Brewery, Dillon Dam Brewery, and Backcountry Brewery. Major brand shops for the likes of Columbia, The North Face, Patagonia, UnderArmor, and others are located in Breckenridge and Silverthorne.

Well, considering that Denver is not in the mountains, and there is no skiing there...you have to travel to the ski areas, and there is SOME transportation, depending on what you plan to do. The most popular, cheap ski rental is Breeze. There are many outlets of the company. There are some in many ski towns, like Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, etc. The cheapest one that I know of is in Idaho Springs or Dumont or one of those little towns right on the highway. There's a little strip. You'd have to be renting a car. There actually IS a small ski area in Evergreen, less than half an hour from the Golden Exit, Magic Mountain or some such...I'll see what I can find. I have no idea what it's like. If it's that single lift that you used to be able to see from the interstate, it's not worth anything. Winter Park/Mary Jane is probably the easiest resort to get to on public transportation. Oh. It's called Echo Mountain. http://www.echomt.com/

Good that you plan your vacation ahead of time. Other than skiing there are other fun activities most ski resorts in Colorado in store, there's snowmobiling, snow tubing, snowshoeing, sleigh ride. Look for hot deals and discounts for all inclusive ski vacation so you don't have to spend too much. Copper Mountain is known for snow tubing that kids will surely love. I include the number of ski resorts in Colorado for your reference.
