Amtrak station in Chicago?

  • I am taking Amtrak west and have a few hours to spend in Chicago between trains. What is the station like? What is easy to get to from there? What should I avoid?

    If you saw the Kevin Cosner movie, The Untouchables, then you have seen the station, Union Station. Be sure to go to the main lobby and see the large room and marble stairs from the movie. It is easy to get to Sears Tower from there - just cross the river at Adams and you can't miss it! If you have time, you can go further north east to State street, shopping at Macy's and the smaller shops and restaurants.

The Amtrak station is right in the heart of downtown with many sights and restaurants nearby. Keep in mind too that most of the midwestern cities served by Amtrak to/from Chicago are also served by Megabus from the same station for far less cost. Check out www.megabus.com

Don't go west...there's nothing there of interest to a tourist. If it's a nice day, hail a cab and explore Millennium Park. I don't recommend shopping (particularly not at Macy's). It's just not the best use of time. Go see something that you can't see in your home city! While the Sears Tower is the tallest building, the view is much better from the Hancock. If you go there, skip the observation deck. Instead, go to the lounge on the 96th floor, order a drink, and take in the view. Don't go to the tall buildings if it's a cloudy day, as you won't be able to see much.

Run over to the Sears Tower and see the spectacular view from the observation deck. It costs. I think it's...$12??? I'm not sure. Oh and grab a Chicago hotdog. Have fun.
