Drive from Philadelphia to New Jersey how to avoid traffic?

Best time of day to drive down through chicago?

  • Can anyone tell me the best route to go heading from Milwaukee down through Chicago? We are on a family vacation going from Milwaukee to Philadelphia. We are traveling with 3 small children and would like to avoid having to sit in traffic for long periods of time. What time of day is best to hit that area now with all the darn construction that never seems to end????

  • Answer:

Between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM. Seriously! That is the only time you can actually move at a decent pace through the greater Chicago area because it's well after all the bars have closed and too early for most people who are going to work. The bad news is you may hit construction anyway, but at that early hour you should be able to move through at a decent rate of speed...

Well it is Friday so a lot of people will be coming into the city and people will be taking off early from work. I go to school in Chicago I live about a mile from downtown. I would say soon after 1 that way people are getting back to work from lunch. or after 6 when the flux from people getting off of work has died down.

*Laughs merrily* I think I may even have peed my pants a little. Really and truly, there is NO good time to go through Ill-in-wa. It's like a friggin' moat for us Wisconsinites. And the ferry is HUGELY overpriced. To literally answer your question, the middle of the night would be best. I'm going to say anywhere from 10pm through maybe 5am. That doesn't mean leave at 5am, that means be travelling through no later than 5am. And no matter which route you take (294 or 94) it's going to suck at some point. 2 Friday evenings ago we used 294 and at one point spent 1 hour to travel 12 miles. I believe 94 would be even worse. This was around 7-8pm.

Sometimes you will get construction even in the middle of the night. There are places that have crews working round the clock. If you are doing 94 which has major construction perhaps late at night is best. Before rush hour might be good but don't take my word for that!
