Where to live in Chicago?

Where to live outside of Chicago?

  • I just got a job offer in Chicago (Data Analyst, $45,000 yr), and I currently live in Boston. I was wondering what would be the cheapest place to live outside in a suburb? I wouldnt mind living in Chicago, but it seems so expensive (except the southside). Any cheaper place in or around Chicago?

  • Answer:

Don't let people dissuade you from the entirety of the South Side; those who warn people away from the entire area must not have been down there to see for themselves what it has to offer! Generally, neighborhoods on the South Side are less expensive (especially from the perspective of someone who is used to paying Boston rent). Look at Bridgeport, Hyde Park, West Lawn and Beverly if you want to pay reasonable rent and still have access to the CTA. If you have a car and don't mind fighting traffic, try looking at these suburbs: Oak Lawn, Crestwood & LaGrange.

Do not live in the south side. There is the highest crime rate there. Around Hyde Park is nice, or Lincoln Park. There are affordable houses or apartments, and there are a lot of things to do there, also.
