What's the cheapest way to travel from Chicago to Jackson Miss for funeral?

  • My husband's brother died and he has to go to the funeral. he has to leave anytime from now till tomorrow and he needs to come back on Friday afternoon. We aren't good with traveling and don't know what the cheapest way to do this would be. We tried looking into tickets for people who are dealing with a death in the family, but those are even more expensive. We're seeing $444 as the cheapest round trip and that's going to kill us, after taxes and one hotel and possibly a rental car for a day. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    What about just driving there. If he has a car that's great on gas it could be cheaper then taking a bus or train. Then he won't have to rent a car. Another possibility is staying with family while he's there instead of a hotel. I don't know your exact situation but it's a suggestion none the less. Sorry for your loss.

Amtrak has train service from Chicago to Jackson for $100 each way, if their schedule works for you. You could also take the bus for a little bit less, but it's about a 16 hour ride each way.
