Can you help me find a travel brochure on Mesopotamia for school?

Can you help me find a nice downtown Chicago neighborhood with a great school system?

  • Hi, our family is looking to move to Chicago from Southwest Michigan. I don't know Chicago neighborhoods well so I'm hoping to get an idea of where to look. We definatley want to be in a downtown area.... where anything you need is in walking distance. Good schools are a must as our children are 8 and 9 yrs. old (both boys). Both parents travel a lot, so having a bee-line to O'hare would be nice. Looking for at least a 2 bdrm./1.5 bath around $1200 - $1400/mo. Do you think this price range is possible? An excellent school system is definately the most important part of the equation though. Does Chicago or Illinois publish a ranking of their school systems? Thanks so much as any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Check out some nearby suburbs. Oak Park has been mentioned and is a good choice. It is west of Chicago. To the north is Evanston, which is on Lake Michigan. To the northwest is Park Ridge. All of these have a border shared with Chicago so they are not that far from the Loop. All have CTA rapid transit trains and Metra trains for commuting. All have ramps on the interstate highway system. School systems are better in Oak Park and Park Ridge but Evanston's is not bad.

hmm. It's tough. But there are some up and coming areas that are very suitable for families! An area I'd recommend is a neighborhood called buck town. Very urban and trendy but hasn't hit the real estate mountain yet(fortunately fore you). They have good deal, new lofts etc. A good, award winning school system as well.Good luck! Welcome to Chicago!

What you are looking for does not exist downtown, unless you are extremely wealthy. Ordinary people live either in the suburbs and take a train downtown, for the plain reason so that they can send their children to decent schools. Oak Park, Oak Forest, Skokie, all sorts of towns. I think you need to talk to a local realtor who can explain that living downtown and having everything within walking distance is not realistic. Also, you had better double that rent allowance. 1400 for a two bedroom downtown? Dream on.
