Where is a WHOLESOME place to live? / How's Chicago?
-
Hi, I live in S Florida, and it's absolutely gorgeous. I have a hard time thinking I'll be strong enough to leave the beautiful scenery & weather behind, but I'm looking for a more wholesome place to live & one day raise a family. I'd like a find a place where people have values, where you make REAL friends you can count on & keep for life... just a normal place, where we can all be happy. Having all 4 seasons would be fantastic. I grew up with that. It was always difficult for me to be in cold places, but especially now that I am used to the heat, I really couldn't live somewhere TOO cold; but if it had all 4 seasons, then I think I could deal with it. I've never been to Chicago, but I hear great things. It seems to be a happier, cleaner version of NY. Am I right? It'd be great because there's the life of the city & the suburbs for families.. I picture it to be full of young, happy people with lots to do. Is Chicago what I think? If not what's a good place? Thanks!

Answer:
I have lived in Chicago for the last 8 years and it's a beautiful city! I actually wouldn't suggest moving to a suburb as they're sort of boring and there is not much to do; but if you do like that sort of community, I suggest moving to the Northwest side of town. That way, you & your family get the quietness and safety of the suburbs with the added benefits of efficient public transportation (this will be very important to your children as they're growing up) and plenty of things to do. However, even the Northwest side can be a little bit too quiet, and the social scene is lacking. Therefore, if you are looking for that really upbeat, happy, young atmosphere, I suggest moving to somewhere on the Northeast side of town. Look into moving to either the Bucktown neighborhood, or the neighborhoods surrounding and including "Boy's town." When looking for your house, condo, or apartment, make sure you are within walking distance (or at least a short bus ride) of a train station as that will allow you the best access to all of the wonderful things that Chicago has to offer. Oh, and Chicago is definitely cleaner than NYC. The people here are more friendly, too. Also, the climates of Chicago and NYC are just about the same-- super cold in the winter, super hot in the summer, GORGEOUS in fall, but spring is super short. Hope that helps!

Chicago definitely is a better version of NY..im from chicago.. the suburbs here really is a good place to start a family. people are polite too and its not too crowded. but chicago gets very COLD in the winter..as a matter of fact we just had the longest winter ever! so if u dont like cold, then u shouldnt live here..try Oregon. I heard it was a nice place to live in.

I live in a Chicago suburb and I absolutely love the city. I've never been to NY, but I have heard that it is cleaner. (Its not clean, I wouldn't say, and there is a lot of poverty.) Besides that, lake Michigan is beautiful, the restaurants and businesses are wonderful, and there are a lot of fun things to do. Theres concerts and shows regularly and the Sears Tower is always fun. The two Chicago baseball teams are really fun to pay attention to and cheer on as well. The weather is, as you may know, windy and often cold (Chicago is nicknamed the windy city.) Theres tons of job oportunities. If you are thinking about the Chicago area, I'd reccommend the suburbs -- its not too hard to commute to the city for work and the suburbs don't have as much poverty.

Then move to a community smaller than Chicago. You will feel lost in such a large city. Not that Chicago isn't friendly; it's just overwhelming. And you don't want too cold? Chicago is not for you. It can be 50 degrees one day, then 10 below the next with the wind chill making it seem like you are living at the North Pole. Weather varies quite a bit here.
