How much do bartenders in Chicago make?

Will my family make it money-wise in Chicago?

  • My family of 5 is moving from Florida to Chicago,IL and I'm extremely worried we wont last long financially. I heard Chicago is a very expensive place to live. My family's doing really bad here on money(REALLY bad),but my dad,and mom both have job oppurtunitys in Chicago We also have a home in Chicago about 15-20 minutes away from the downtown area that we will be renting from our couisins. I'll also be planning on finding a job,but I don't want to end up even worse then we are here. Any advice,or input?

  • Answer:

Most people in Chicago are not "higher level" job-types. Chicago is made up of 77 neighborhoods, and I would bet that at least 50 of those neighborhoods are full of people in the same financial situation as your parents. Not every neighborhood is as expensive as say Printer's Row, Lincoln Park, or Streeterville. Your parents are probably getting a good deal by renting from family, and utilities are cheap in the city...you don't pay for water at all, and some older buildings have radiators in them so heat in the winter is totally free. There are nice neighborhoods that also have cheap rent, it's not so bad.

Depends what area of Florida and what you consider bad. There are million dollar neighborhoods in Chicago as well as Florida. And cheaper places too. If you are willing to work and spend money frugally than you should have no problem.

Chicago is not expensive at all. New york is twice as expensive or even LA

Well depending were you lived i Florida, because i knew some place are more pricey then other. However, no matter what city it is, a city is always expensive to live in. But if your parents jobs starting out are above the regular income, you should be fine. If you can, get a part-time job to help out. There are great places to work in a city.

If both of your parents have already lined up job opportunities and a place to stay, I think they've already done the math on the situation and have decided this is the right choice for your family. Salaries in Chicago are based on the cost of living here, so telling you average local costs for rent or food wouldn't help you much. It's likely your parents will be making more to compensate for any higher costs. Also, by arranging to rent a home from a relative, they may have cut down on the most expensive item in the family's budget, too. There's no point in putting the cart before the horse: once you've moved, you'll have a better sense of how things will go. Besides, you can look at this as an opportunity. You might enjoy making a fresh start and living in a new part of the country.

Chicago is extremely expensive, but higher level occupation salaries can afford it.
